Despite all four UB seniors scoring in double figures, it wasn't enough as the Valparaiso Crusaders eliminated the Bulls from the 1998 Mid-Con Tournament with a convincing 84-73 victory. The loss was UB's seventh straight loss to Valpo, and marks the second time in three years that the Bulls have been eliminated from the Mid-Con Tournament in the semifinals. Senior Rasaun Young led UB with 23 points, while senior Mike Martinho had 19. Seniors Scott McMillin and Matt Clemens scored 12 and 11 points respectively for UB, playing their final game as a member of the Mid-Continent Conference before they join the Mid-American Conference next season.

With the score tied 24-24 in the first half, the Bulls suddenly went cold and were outscored 18-4 the rest of the period and faced a 42-28 halftime deficit. UB shot a frigid 26.7% (8-of-30) from the floor compared to Valpo at 51.5% (17-of-33). Although the second half saw the Bulls improve to connect on 19-of-29 (65.5%) of their shots, Valpo made 56% of their field goals after the break and cruised to the 11-point win.
