Football (2-2)

Marcel Shipp ran for a career-high 230 yards and the University at Buffalo had four crucial turnovers in dropping a 51-27 decision to the University of Massachusetts Saturday at McQuirk Stadium.

Buffalo racked up a season-high 529 yards in the loss but watched the Minutemen turn four turnovers into 24 points. Shipp led a UMass (2-1) rushing attack that accumulated 339 yards. The Bulls limited Massachusetts quarterback Todd Bankhead who had thrown for more than 700 yards in his first two games to 13-of-30 passing for 192 yards.

The Bulls trailed 14-0 in the first quarter before their offense came to life. Senior wide receiver Kali Watkins (Rochester, NY/W. Irondequoit) caught a 12-yard touchdown strike from senior Chad Salisbury (Newell, PA/Frazier) with 1:45 left in the opening stanza. Watkins finished the game with seven catches for 114 yards while Salisbury was 27-of-40 for 375 yards.

The Bulls tied the game at 14 when freshman Derrick Gordon (New York, NY/August Martin) scored from 12 yards with 12:27 left in the first half and Drew Haddad (Westlake, OH/St. Ignatius) caught the two-point conversion from Salisbury. Haddad tied his career-high with 11 receptions for 173 yards.

The Minutemen took the lead for good after Josh Roth (Conewango Valley, NY/Pine Valley) fumbled at the UMass 29-yard line. One play later, flanker Eddie Bowman connected with Jimmy Moore for a 60-yard TD pass on a flea flicker to give UMass a 21-14 edge. UB came right back on a 29-yard TD hookup from Salisbury to Haddad, but the hosts struck twice more to take a 35-20 lead into the lockerroom.

In the second half, Todd Bankhead extended the UMass lead to 41-20 one play after Gordon fumbled inside the UB 10-yard line. UB again responded when Roth scored his seventh touchdown of the season from one-yard out capping a 13-play, 80-yard drive. Tailback David Schmidli (Ransomville, NY/Wilson) had 35 yards rushing and receiving on that drive to cut the lead to 41-27.

UMass put the game away when Jeremy Robinson stepped in front of a Salisbury pass and returned it to the Buffalo three-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Kevin Quinlan scored from two yards out three plays later to put the Minutemen up 48-27.

Roth led the UB ground game with 64 yards on 12 carries. Tight end Gabe Kogler (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had a career-high three catches for 39 yards.

Defensively, freshman Chris Shelly (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) led the way with nine tackles, including three for losses. Another freshman linebacker Brandon Jordan (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) added eight tackles and a sack. Cornerback Tory Smith (East Patchogue, NY/Half Hollow Hills) added eight tackles, a blocked field goal and a pass breakup for the Bulls, who face Cornell Saturday (10/3) at noon in a game televised on the Empire Sports Network.

Volleyball (8-6)

The University at Buffalo dropped its MAC curtainraiser in three games to visiting Miami (Ohio) Saturday, 15-11, 15-12, 15-3. Somer Deschambault (Midland, ONT/St. Theresa's) had 18 assists and outside hitter Keri Shiels (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) had 11 digs.

UB hosts Kent Wednesday (9/30) night at 7 pm.

Women's Soccer (7-2-1)

The Bulls halted Duquesne's three-match defensive scoreless streak Wednesday, downing the visitors, 2-0. Heather Collins (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) scored 54 seconds into the game and Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece- Athena) notched her ninth of the year later in the half on a pass from her sister, Julie (Rochester,NY/Greece-Athena).

Buffalo went on the road for a MAC weekend, and lost a 2-1 heartbreaker at Bowling Green Saturday. Caryn Davis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill-East) scored on a header with just 2:57 remaining, but the hosts countered with just 1:33 remaining on a 2-on-1.

A day later at Miami in Oxford, sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Adams (Rochester, NY/Greece-Arcadia) made 10 saves as the Bulls and Red Hawks battled to a double-overtime scoreless tie.

The results left Coach Jean-A. Tassy's squad at 7-2-1 and 1-2-1 in the MAC.

The team visits Northern Illinois Thursday (10/1) in Dekalb in MAC play.

Men's Soccer (8-2)

The Bulls played only one match during the week, hosting and defeating St. Francis (PA), 2-0, Tuesday.

Sophomore midfielder John Shannon (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) booted home his first of the year - and his Bulls' career - shortly before halftime to produce the game-winning goal. Shannon then sent off senior Doug Geller (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills-East) on a breakaway with a perfect pass at midfield and the defenseman beat the goalkeeper in the second half for his first career goal at UB.

Senior goalie and co-captain Jim Schoenberg (Somers, NY/Somers) recorded his fourth shutout of the 1998 campaign.

The squad is back in action Wednesday (9/30) at Virginia, which lost to UCLA in last year's NCAA Soccer Championship game.

Women's Tennis (5-3)

The Bulls defeated Canisius, 8-1, in a makeup match Thursday (9/24). Annette Dillon and Nicole Sargent each won her singles match, then teamed for a first doubles triumph. Dillon was the only winner over the weekend in losses at Duquesne and Pitt.

Men's Tennis (3-1)

The Bulls blanked Canisius, 9-0, and dominated all six singles and three doubles matches. They're on the road over the weekend with matches at Siena (9/2) and the University of Vermont (9/3).

Cross Country (Men 4-0; Women 4-0)

The University at Buffalo women's cross country team defeated 12 other schools and bowed to only host Western Ontario in the Mustangs' Invitational Saturday. UB scored 66 points, 20 more than Western and 39 more than Syracuse University, the third-place finisher. Junior Marie Macander (Clifton Park, NY)/Shenendehowa High) was Coach Dick Barry's top finisher. However, Marie had plenty of help. Teammates Casey Spencer (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post-East) and Eileen Rose (Latham, NY/Shaler) were 11th and 12th, respectively, with UB's Jennifer Folckemer (Clarence, NY/Clarence) 15th, and Lisa Luce (Varysburg, NY/Attica), 17th.

The men's squad scored 146 points to finish sixth in the 13-team field at Western Ontario.

Pat Nolan (Buffalo/Bishop Timon) was the Bulls' top finisher. His time of 32:55 in the 10K event was good for fourth place and was 40 seconds behind the winner. The University of Windsor won the meet with 46 points.

Both teams will compete in the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon (10/2) in South Bend, IN.
