UB Sponsors Basketball Clinic
75 to 100 middle school students are expected to attend the clinic which will run from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm, with registration beginning at 9:30 am. The clinic is free and open to boys and girls, ranging from grades 3-8, who are residents of University Heights. Participants will receive instruction in six basketball skills, including shooting, ball handling, passing, defense, footwork and rebounding. The kids will also have an opportunity to ask questions of UB coaches and student-athletes. Although UB offers numerous sports clinics for children each summer on campus, this is the first time the University has conducted such a clinic directly within the community. “We are always happy to be involved in the community,” said Reggie Witherspoon, men’s basketball head coach. “I believe this is a win-win situation as I think our student-athletes will benefit as much as the kids participating.” “Furthermore, what makes this program even more special is that we get to do it with the women’s team, as we are both committed to raising community awareness of educational opportunities,” Witherspoon added.
The children will learn about the value of an education from women’s basketball head coach, Linda Hill-MacDonald and Witherspoon, and assistant coach Jim Kwitchoff will also make an appearance. “This clinic is part of the university’s ongoing effort to reach out to our neighbors in a positive and impactful way,” said Vincent Clark, director of community relations.
