Football (1-1) A balanced offensive attack and four touchdowns by junior fullback Josh Roth (Conewango Valley, NY/Pine Valley) led the Buffalo Bulls to a 40-17 win over Lock Haven University before a UB Stadium record crowd of 20,760 on Saturday night. The loss snapped a nine-game losing streak dating back to last year for the Bulls. Buffalo pounded out 274 yards on the ground with Roth gaining a career-high 72 yards and senior David Hinson (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) added a career-best 91 yards on 17 carries. Hinson's 17-yard touchdown run with 10:41 left gave the Bulls a 31-17 lead after the Bald Eagles had cut the lead to 24-17 with 13:34 left. The Bulls jumped to a 24-3 halftime lead as Roth scored from eight yards and one yard out and caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Chad Salisbury (Newell, PA/Frazier HS). Sophomore Scott Keller (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central) kicked a 33-yard field goal as well to help the Bulls to the big halftime edge. After Lock Haven cut the lead to 24-17, Jamie Allen fumbled a punt by Mike Masucci that was recovered by Javunt Pratt (Rochester, NY/John Marshall). Three plays later Hinson scored from 17 yards out. After a Lock Haven punt, the Bulls went eight plays and 41 yards for another score with the key play being a 24-yard run by junior flanker Drew Haddad (Cleveland, OH/St, Ignatius) after a perfect pitch by backup quarterback Mike Gaydosz (Elwood City, PA/Riverside). The Bulls closed the scoring as Brad Tanton (Vestal, NY/Vestal) sacked Lock Haven punter Robert Glielmi in the end zone to make the score 40-17. Senior Antonio Perry (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) led the Bulls with eight tackles while senior Dan Poulsen (North Tonawanda, NY/N. Tonawanda) had six tackles and 1.5 sacks. The Bulls travel to Lafayette next Saturday for the first of three straight road games. Volleyball (5-3) The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team defeated St. Bonaventure on Wednesday night (9/9), 15-6, 15-8, 15-10, and went 2-1 this weekend in Ithaca, NY (9/11-12) at the Cornell Big Red Invitational. Senior captain Aprille Sweeting (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and freshman standout Heather Barfuss (Huntington, NY/John H. Glenn) led the Bulls with seven kills each in Buffalo's home opener on Wednesday. On Friday (9/11) the Bulls spilt 1-1 losing to Northeastern in a three-game sweep in Match 2 of the Invitational and defeated host Cornell in Match 5 of the day, 3-1. The Bulls lost to Northeastern 15-6, 15-9, 15-6 and were led by seniors middle hitter Sweeting and outside hitter Chassey Stubler (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) with seven kills each. In the victory over Cornell, the Bulls were led by middle hitter Barfuss who had nine kills and six digs in the victory. The Bulls defeated the Big Red, 15-11, 15-11, 15-13. On Saturday (9/12) the Bulls defeated Lafayette College in a three-game sweep, 15-1, 15-0, 15-9. The Bulls were led by freshman middle hitter Ann Williams (Northport, NY/Northport) with nine kills. Averaging 16 assists and five digs per match, Junior Somer Deschambault (Midland, ONT/St. Theresa's) was named to the Big Red Invitational All-Tournament Team. The Bulls will play at home this weekend against Youngstown State on Friday (9/18) at 7:00pm and will face Columbia and St. Francis (PA) on Saturday (9/19) at 1:00 and 7:00pm. Women's Soccer (5-0) The Bulls maintained their perfect record this week as they defeated visiting Canisius, 3-2, on Wednesday, and claimed the 1998 Umbro Classic Kickoff title by downing host Furman, 3-1, on Friday and Liberty, 4-0, on Saturday. During the Canisius outing, sophomore forward Paula Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece- Athena) and senior captain Julie Listrani (Rochester, NY/Greece- Athena) scored one goal apiece in the second half of play. After a scoreless first half in Friday's match freshman midfielder Mary Doheny (Bay Village, OH/Magnificot) tallied a goal off of a Heather Collins (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) assist. Collins went on to find the back of the net twice during the match to seal a victory for Coach Tassy's squad. In Saturday's blanking of Liberty, Paula Listrani netted three goals. Senior goalie Mary Morgan (Niagara Falls, NY/LaSalle) earned her first shut-out of the season in the victory. Collins was named the tournament MVP while both Listrani sisters and junior midfielder Tara Donahue (Port Crane, NY/Chenango Valley) made the All-Tournament Team. Men's Soccer (5-1) The Bulls men's soccer team took part in West Virginia University's Mountaineer Classic this weekend and upended St. Joseph's (PA), 4-1, on Saturday, and lost to host WVU 4-1, on Sunday. Junior forward Steve Butcher (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) scored two second-half goals and freshman midfielder John Shannon (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) came off the bench to lead Coach Astudillo's team to victory on Saturday. UB goalkeeper Jim Schoenberg (Somers, NY/Somers) had six saves for the winners. Butcher tallied the Bull's lone goal in Sunday's match against undefeated tournament champion WVU. Buffalo finished in second place out of the four teams partaking in the tournament. The squad is next in action on Wednesday at 7 pm against host Canisius. Women's Tennis (4-1) The women's tennis team was in action at home this past weekend and won against Cleveland State, 7-2, on Saturday and lost to Bucknell, 8-1, on Sunday. Senior Danielle Rakowsky (Las Vegas, NV/Clark) (No. 3 singles) defeated her Cleveland State opponent, 6-7, 7-6,7-2 (tie-breaker). In their No. 3 doubles debut Anne Polino and Shani Amarasinghe won, 8-3, on Saturday. Against Bucknell, senior Annulett Dillon (Buffalo, NY/Bennett) (No. 1 singles) was the lone victorious Bull with her 2-6, 7-5, 7-6, 7-3 (tie-breaker) win. The Bulls next match is set for Tuesday against Canisius at 4:00 pm. Men's Tennis (1-1) The men's tennis team split their first two matches of the season, defeating Niagara, 7-0 on Friday and losing to Marist, 4-3 on Saturday. Budi Susanto won both of his weekend matches in singles and also combined with Earl McGrath to win both doubles matches. Andrew Garber, Earl McGrath, Rick Poveromo andJustin Brtko all won in singles matches versus Niagara. Cross Country (1-0) Junior Marie Macander (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) paced the University at Buffalo harriers to a 15-50 victory over visting Niagara University by setting a new school record of 18:50.1 in the 5,000 meter run. The UB course record was previously held by Karen Lilly who finished the 1997 UB Invitational in 19:08. Senior Sam Burroughs (Melrose, NY/Hoosick Valley) (24:04) edged out teammate junior Patrick Nolan (Buffalo, NY/ Bishop Timon) (27:05.2) for top honors in the men's 8,000 meter race. The Bulls claimed the top five finisher spots in the women's race and the
top seven in the men's race.
