UB Athletics To Help Beautify City

Athletic Department working with University District to improve McCarthy Park

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo Division of Athletics planned "Day of Caring" to help beautify McCarthy Park scheduled for today (June 19) has been postponed due to inclement weather.

The event will now take place on Tuesday, June 24 from 10 am to 2 pm at the park near UB's South Campus on Amherst Street. Over 30 members of the UB Athletic department, as well as Bulls' student-athletes, will take part in the event.

Participants will be removing graffiti, picking up trash, planting new grass and beautifying the trees in McCarthy Park. The Athletic Department is working in conjunction with both University District council member Betty Jean Grant and Jim Pavel, of the City Beautification Project, to make this event possible.

"This project provides an opportunity to show our commitment to the City of Buffalo while fulfilling our mission to provide service to the community," said Bill Maher, interim Director of Athletics. "We are working closely with Betty-Jean Grant and City of Buffalo officials to make this project a success. We are excited to be part of a much larger project, which is to continue to make Buffalo an even better place to live."

"It's a great opportunity to show the collaboration between UB Athletics, the McCarthy Park steering committee, the youth in the community and the University District Council office who are all working together to make sure the park has a positive impact on the residents that utilize it," said Grant. "I look forward to many more collaborations in the future to make the University District a nicer place to live."
