Four UB Student-Athletes Named SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award WinnersBUFFALO, NY - Four University at Buffalo student-athletes have been selected as SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award winners for 2005-06. The Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award was created in 2003-04 to recognize students who have combined academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement at the Division I, Division III and NJCAA levels at SUNY schools. One award winner was selected in each sport at each of the three athletic levels - for a total of 73 students in 19 different sports from 31 SUNY campuses. For the first time since the creation of the award, Buffalo did not lead the Division I selections. Albany led the way with eight and Binghamton and Stony Brook both had five. All of the award winners were honored at a Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Awards ceremony at Westchester Community College on Monday, May 1. Buffalo’s four award winners are as follows:
Women’s Rowing, 3.914 GPA, Cognitive Science A heavyweight member of the women's rowing team, Corey's crew finished first at the Head of the Ohio in the fall. She finished second at the Head of the Fish, also in the fall. Corey was a member of the Second Varsity 8+ that finished first in the Knecht Cup and second in the Harvey Cup. At the ECAC Metro rowing Championships, the Second Varsity had the second best heat time and managed a fifth place finish in the finals. As a whole, Buffalo finished second at the championships. Corey serves as president of the 2005-06 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Track and Field, 3.694 GPA, Classics During the indoor season Kohout qualified for the ECAC Championships in three different events, including as a member of the distance medley relay that set a school record, while winning the MAC title. Kohout was also named to the Indoor Track Academic All-MAC Team. Kohout ran a season-best 2:11.79 in the 800-meter run at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge. Kohout also was part of the 1,600-meter relay that ran a season-best 3:52.79 at the ECAC Championships. During the outdoor season, Kohout has the top time on the squad in the 800 meters, clocking in at 2:10.88 at the Gina Relays.
Women's Tennis, 3.605 GPA, Social Sciences A two-year captain, Ortman is the UB women's tennis all-time leader in singles and doubles wins finishing her career with 59 wins in both singles and doubles play. Ortman finished 19-7 in singles play on the season, helping the Bulls secure the second seed in the MAC Tournament, the highest seed ever for a Buffalo tennis program. Ortman was named Mid-American Conference Co-Player of the Week on April 26 and was named to the 2006 Academic All-MAC team following the season. Ortman serves as secretary of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Football, 3.444 GPA, Management Sanders earned Academic All-MAC honors and was named to the Academic All-District team in 2005. Sanders finished the 2005 season as the team leader with 6.5 sacks on the year, including two in the opening game against Connecticut. Sanders finished with a season-high nine tackles against Syracuse, also contributing with one sack. The defensive end finished his UB career with 14.0 sacks, which is the seventh-most in school history. |
