UB Swim Teams Named to Academic All-American Squads

Teams selected to College Swim Coaches Association of America's top academic list

BUFFALO, NY – The men's and women's swimming and diving programs at the University at Buffalo have been named to the College Swim Coaches Association of America's Academic All-American Team for the fall 2006 semester, the association announced recently.

The UB women compiled a 3.216 combined grade point average for the first semester of the 2006-07 school year, ranking the squad in the Excellent category, according the CSCAA's ranking system while the men's team compiled a 2.86 combined grade point average, earning a spot in the Commendable category. Schools posting a 3.25 GPA or higher receive a Superior rating. A GPA of 3.00 places the program in the Excellent category and 2.80 earns the Commendable level. A total of 352 teams, 142 men's and 210 women's, from the NCAA's three divisions as well as NAIA and junior college programs, earned team Academic All-America honors.

Other Mid-American Conference programs to make the list included the men's and women's teams from Eastern Michigan, Ball State and Miami (OH) as well as the Akron women's team. The University of Denver posted the top GPA in both the men's and women's rankings.

Two UB swimmers, senior women's distance freestyler Eugenie Viale (Le Lavondou, France/Lycée Jean Aicard) and men's sophomore backstroker Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale) were named to the Academic All-MAC squad at the end of the just-concluded season.
