Karen Corey Receives Fulbright Scholarship
“It’s a great honor to be selected to participate in this program,” Corey said. “The Fulbright program has a long and illustrious history and it will be an amazing experience to be one of those people.” The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. It is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. The Deutsche Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service) offered Corey a grant following a four-week summer study at the Freie Universitat Berlin this past year. The course she took was Literature in Berlin, which was a survey of literary history about the city of Berlin. “One of the best experiences with this summer course was that it was a course directly from the German university rather than an American university-sponsored course,” Corey said. “Instead of being in a class full of Americans, there were 11 different nationalities represented in my 14-person seminar. At the conclusion of my course, I had enough time (and money) to be able to spend some time traveling around the country and getting to explore different areas and cultures.” Upon returning to UB in the fall, her history professor, Professor Mazon, recommended that she apply for a Fulbright grant after Corey had discussed studying in Germany for a year or two after completing her undergraduate studies. Following a year-long application process that involved several interviews, her name was sent to the National Selection Committee, where she then received a letter stating that she was a successful candidate in February.
Corey participated for four years on the rowing squad before joining the cross-country squad in her fifth year. In 2006, Corey was a member of the Second Varsity Eight squad that won the Grand Final at the 2006 Knecht Cup in Camden, NJ. She also posted her best time in the women’s 5k race, placing 19th of 40 runners with a time of 19:42 at the Reif Memorial Invitational at Cornell University.
