UB’s 18th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration Set For February 16

Olympic Medalist Anita L. DeFrantz will be featured speaker

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo will hold its 18th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration on Saturday, February 16.

Olympic medalist Anita L. DeFrantz will be the featured speaker at the main presentation, sponsored by the UB Division of Athletics in conjunction with UB’s Undergraduate Student Association, on Saturday, February 16 in Slee Hall on UB’s North Campus. The presentation will also feature student-athlete speakers in addition to DeFrantz. The main presentation will begin at 3:30 pm and will be followed by a reception and a UB basketball doubleheader, as the women will take on Central Michigan at 5:00 pm and the men will face Miami at 7:00 pm.

Additionally, former UB Senior Woman Administrator and Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and current Senior Assistant Vice President for Resource Planning and Information Management in UB’s Office of Academic Planning and Budget, Laura Barnum, will be presented with the UB Recognition Award at halftime of the basketball game.

Prior to the presentation by DeFrantz and student-athlete speakers, a Girls Multi-Sports Clinic will take place in the UB Alumni Arena triple gym. The clinic for girls ages 7-14 will feature three healthy behaviors mini-sessions and is set to take place from 12:30 pm- 3:30 pm. Registration will begin at 12:00 pm. This free event includes: clinic, pizza party, and one ticket to the UB Men’s and Women’s Basketball Doubleheader at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Additional game tickets can be purchased for $5. National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) is a national event in its 22nd year that celebrates and honors women’s participation in and contributions to sports around the country and around the world. Throughout its history, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
