BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo will celebrate its 14th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day in early February, with festivities scheduled from Wednesday, February 4 through Saturday, February 14. US Gymnastics team member and Olympic Gold Medalist Dominique Dawes will be the featured speaker at the main presentation, sponsored by the UB Division of Athletics in conjunction with UB's Undergraduate Student Association, on Wednesday, February 11 in Slee Hall on UB's North Campus. The main presentation will begin at 5 pm and be followed by a reception and women's basketball game against Kent State in Alumni Arena at 7 pm. Former UB President William R. Greiner and his wife Carol will also be presented with the UB Recognition Award at the event in Slee Hall, which will also feature student-athlete speakers in addition to Dawes. Group tickets to the presentation in Slee Hall and to the women's basketball game are still available for $3.00 apiece by calling the UB Ticket Office at 645-6666.

The National Girls and Women in Sports Day festivities at UB will kick off on Wednesday, February 4 with a panel discussion with University faculty and staff from 8 am to 9:30 am in Clemens Hall, room 120, sponsored by the Institute for Research and Education on Women & Gender. The breakfast networking event is entitled "Beyond the Playing Field," and the discussion will explore the theme of "Playing Fair" and its effects on other areas, from Title IX to sports psychology.

As part of the community outreach portion of the celebration, UB varsity and club student athletes and coaches will host an all-youth multi-sports clinic at 11 am on Saturday, February 14 in Alumni Arena, followed by a basketball doubleheader (women versus Akron at 1 pm, men versus Central Michigan at 3 pm). Boys and girls ages 5 to 15 can register for the event on UB's website at www.ubathletics.buffalo.edu/ub-ngwsd/clinic.shtml.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day is a national event that celebrates and honors women's participation in and contributions to sports around the country and around the world. UB's celebrations have featured Olympians like Janet Evans, Cheryl Miller, Sheryl Swoopes and Jillian Vogtli, as well as television's Robin Roberts.
