Bulls get Homecoming win over Bears

UB keeps Morgan State winless in a 35-17 victory

The University at Buffalo Bulls moved to 3-3 on the season as they defeated visiting Morgan State, 35-17, in front of a Homecoming crowd of 19,854 at UB Stadium.

The Bulls balanced offensive attack of 500 total yards was led by wide receiver Kali Watkins (Rochester, NY/W. Irondequoit), the leading receiver for the day (six receptions for 158 yards.), and quarter back Chad Salisbury (Newell, PA/Frazier) (13-of-14 for 270).

The two combined for three passes that resulted in touchdowns, which included a 52-yard bomb at 4:35 in the first quarter. Watkins' three TD receptions was a career-high for the senior tri-captain.

Running back Derrick Gordon (Brooklyn, NY/August Martin), the Bull's rushing leader (nine carries for 91 yards), struck first for the Bulls with a one-yard TD run only 2:42 into the game. He later left the game in the second quarter with a sprained foot.

Morgan State only had the lead once in the game after Jay Hinton scored to make it 14-13, after a seven-yard run at 12:47 in the second quarter.

Freshman running back David Schmidli (Wilson, NY/Wilson) earned his first career TD on a 13-yard run late in the third. Schmidli finished with 35 yards rushing while fullback Josh Roth (Conewango Valley, NY/Pine Valley) added 63 yards on 10 carries.

Junior linebacker Josh Trexler (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) led the defense for Coach Craig Cirbus's squad with 14 tackles. Cornerback Carlos Spencer (Buffalo, NY/Traditional), linebackers Antonio Perry (Elmira, NY Elmira Free Academy), and Chris Shelly (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area) had nine stops a piece while defensive lineman Bob Dzvonick (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area) added eight tackles and a quarterback sack.

Senior tri-captain Dan Poulsen (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda), who had five tackles in the win, was honored as the Burger King Scholar Athlete in a pre-game ceremony. Poulsen was presented a check for $10,000 in his name to go to UB's general scholarship fund.

The Bulls host hometown rival Canisius next Saturday at 7:00 pm.
