Minutemen Hold Off Bulls
BUFFALO, NY - The University of Massachusetts gave up a school-record 459
yards passing on Saturday afternoon but came up with two key fourth-quarter
interceptions to defeat the University at Buffalo, 26-20, at UB Stadium.
Tehran Hunter returned an interception 100 yards - matching the school
record - with 9:26 left in the fourth quarter and Bryan Mooney intercepted
a Chad Salisbury pass with 1:46 left in regulation as UMass (2-5) held off
the Bulls (2-6).
The Bulls had pulled to within 26-20 when Salisbury - who completed 30-of-51
passes for 459 yards and three touchdowns - hit split end Drew Haddad
with an 11-yard TD pass with 6:04 left. Haddad was one of three UB players to
go over 100 yards
receiving in the game with a career-high 11 catches for 147 yards. However,
after Salisbury had marched UB to the Minutemen 47 yard-line, Mooney made
the game-saving interception at the UMass 31-yard line and the visitors
were able to run out the clock to win their third straight over the Bulls.
The 459 yards passing by the Bulls were the most the Minutemen have given
up in their 114-year football history. Kali Watkins added nine catches for
128 yards and Jamie Gasparre had six catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns
(48 and 63 yards) for Buffalo. Chris Price had eight solo stops for the
Minutemen, while Ted McDuffie had 12 tackles and Londell
Young had 11 stops and a forced fumble for the Bulls.
"We reverted in the second half to having mistakes snowball on us,"
said UB head coach Craig Cirbus. "We have been relying so much on the
pass, but today is an example of what happens when you create a personality.
When you become that biased in your play selection and you become that reliant
on one part of the game those things will happen, you're going to get turnovers."
