Blue Posts 14-0 Shutout Over WhiteBUFFALO, NY - A balanced defensive effort, including six-and-a-half quarterback sacks, led the Blue team to a 14-0 win over the White in the annual Blue-White football spring scrimmage at UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon. In a day when both defenses dominated, the Blue team used a pair of scoring passes to total the only points in the game. Senior Drew Haddad (Westlake, OH/St. Ignatius) caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Mike Gaydosz (Ellwood City, PA/Riverside) to open the scoring in the second quarter. That touchdown was set up by a sack and forced fumble by sophomore Kevin McCarthy (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Bedford) and the Blue scored four plays later. The Blue added an insurance touchdown on the last play of the game when Kareem Simmons (New York, NY/Manhattan Science Center) caught a five-yard pass from Joe Freedy (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park). Freedy was the most successful of the UB quarterbacks, completing 10-of-15 passes for 99 yards and a score while playing for both sides in the scrimmage. The Bulls five captains selected the two teams in the first year where the squad was split in half and a regulation game was played. The Blue defense was led by sophomore Brandon Jordan (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) who had seven tackles and a sack while Adolphus Barkor (New York, NY/Nassau CC) added five tackles, - including two for loss - and broke up a pass in the end zone. The White also played some great defense, allowing only 198 yards of total offense, led by redshirt freshman Jamie Guerra (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon) and senior Josh Trexler (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy). Guerra had a game-high 13 tackles - including nine solo stops and a sack - while Trexler had four tackles and a pair of interceptions, one of which he returned 34 yards. Junior Eric Pipkins (Pittsburgh, PA/Valley) added nine tackles and two pass breakups for the White team while Kevin Johnson (Pittsburgh, PA/Valley), his former high school teammate, had eight tackles. Despite the lack of point production, sophomore Dahnel Singfield (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar) paced the White offense with four catches for 51 yards. |
