Bulls Announce 1999 Football CaptainsBUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo head football coach Craig Cirbus announced today his team's captains for the 1999 football season, UB's first at Division I-A since 1970. Tabbed by their teammates were senior offensive tackle Tom Brown (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central), senior offensive guard Mike Garofalo (Sharpsville, PA/Kennedy Christian) and senior split end Drew Haddad (Westlake, OH/St. Ignatius) on offense and junior defensive tackle Josh Stello (Moon Township, PA/Moon HS) and junior cornerback Carlos Spencer (Buffalo, NY/South Park HS). Cirbus noted that again this season the selection of the captains came from an internal voting process. "I polled each player privately during our off-season meetings and they were the five names that came up repeatedly," said Cirbus. "It's a level of respect and a direct reflection of the work ethic of those selected that their teammates spoke so highly of them." "Those five individuals are great ambassadors for our football program as well as the University," said Cirbus. "They fall in place well with the long line of super leadership that we've been fortunate enough to have in our tenure here." Brown, a 6-5, 294-pound senior tackle, is a two-year starter who helped UB set a school record last season for rushing yards. He is joined on the offensive line by three-year starting guard Mike Garofalo (6-4, 287), who also earned a berth on the 1998 GTE District I Academic All-American team. Haddad, meanwhile, is already the school's record holder for career receptions (155) and punt return yardage (533) and is second all-time in receiving yardage with 2,251 yards. Defensively, Stello - a 6-2, 299-pound tackle - started all 11 games last season after moving over from offensive guard where he started eight games as a freshman. Spencer, meanwhile, is a two-year starter who finished fourth on the team in tackles with 60 last season and broke up seven passes. The five captains made the selections for the two teams that will compete on Sunday in the annual Blue and White scrimmage at UB Stadium at 2:00 pm. The game is free and open to the public. |
