Hofher Adds Two More To Football Staff

Roy Istvan and Clayton Carlin join UB as offensive line and defensive backfield coaches

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo football coach Jim Hofher continued to add to his staff this week by bringing on board Roy Istvan as offensive line coach and Clayton Carlin as defensive assistant working with the Bulls' secondary.

Istvan comes to UB from Southern Connecticut University where he has spent the past 10 seasons after his playing career concluded with the Owls. A native of Stratford, CT, Istvan joined Southern Connecticut's staff in 1990 as a volunteer assistant and was eventually named offensive line coach in 1993. He added offensive coordinator to his title in 1996 and during his four years in that position, the Owls broke 53 offensive records.

During Istvan's tenure as offensive coordinator, Southern Connecticut turned out the school's all-time leading rusher, receiver and passer and he also tutored two-time All-American Joe Andruzzi, currently a two-year starter on the New England Patriots offensive line.

In addition, two other players that Istvan recruited - Rashan Dumas and Damon Richardson - were tabbed as Division II All-Americans. Dumas is Southern Connecticut's all-time leading rusher while Richardson was named an All-American at cornerback this month.

Istvan played his high school ball at Frank Scott Bunnell HS where he was an All-County and All-Conference selection as an offensive and defensive tackle. He and his wife Kristin have three children, Jaylin (5) and twins Kambria and Magnus who are a year-and-a-half.

Also joining UB's coaching staff is Philadelphia native Clayton Carlin, who spent the past season at Villanova as defensive backfield coach. Carlin spent one season on head coach Andy Talley's staff at Villanova, coming from New Mexico State where he was the wide receivers and special teams coach from 1997-99. Prior to that, Carlin coached at Nebraska from 1994-96 where he assisted with the Cornhuskers' defensive backs.

After graduating from Juniata College in 1987, Carlin was the head coach at St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia from 1988-92 before serving as an assistant at Division III Delaware Valley College from 1993-94. Carlin and his wife Kathleen have a daughter (Carsen). He earned his Bachelor of Science in Communications from Juniata and a Master's in Education at Nebraska.

"We are thrilled to have coaches Istvan and Carlin join our staff," said Hofher. "They bring experience and tremendous recruiting knowledge of the Northeast and will be a strong asset to our football program."

Istvan and Carlin's additions bring the UB football staff to six, joining Jim Knowles (defensive coordinator), Bill Lazor (quarterbacks), Thomas Woods (wide receivers) and Tom Jones (defensive backfield).
