Woods, Jones Named to Football Staff
Head coach Jim Hofher continues assembling his staff of assistants
BUFFALO, NY University at Buffalo head football coach Jim Hofher has made more progress in assembling his new staff, adding one assistant coach on both the offensive and defensive sides. Thomas Woods has been named as the Bulls' wide receivers coach after serving in that same position at Western Carolina University for the past four years, and Tom Jones, who coached Buffalo's defensive backfield and safeties last season, will remain on the Bulls' football staff as a defensive assistant. Woods and Jones join Jim Knowles and Bill Lazor, who Hofher named earlier this week as the Bulls' defensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, respectively.
Like Knowles and Lazor, Woods has ties to Hofher dating back to 1989 when both were at the University of Tennessee, Hofher as the quarterbacks coach and Woods in his senior year as a wide receiver. Woods was a two-time All-Southeastern Conference selection while with the Vols, and he finished his career first on Tennessee's career receptions list with 124, a number that still stands in fourth place in the Vols' record book. Woods was drafted out of college by the Miami Dolphins and played four preseason games before a separated shoulder ended his career in the NFL. He played two seasons with the Barcelona Dragons of the NFL's World League of American Football before turning his full attention to coaching. Woods was the wide receivers and kick/punt returners coach at Western Carolina for the past four seasons after coaching at Appalachian State for one season. This past year, he mentored Catamount rookie wide receiver Lamont Seward to a record five Southern Conference Freshman of the Week awards. Woods returned to Tennessee in 1996 to finish his bachelor's degree in education. He has a 13-year old son, Michael Thomas.
Jones completed his third season with the Bulls in 2000, but his first coaching the defensive backfield and the safeties after working with the defensive line in his first two years at UB. Jones has 12 years of Division I-A coaching experience to his credit, working with the defensive line, outside linebackers and defensive secondary at Kent State, Idaho State, Ohio State, Arizona State and New Mexico State.
"We're thrilled to have both Toms join our staff," said UB head coach Jim Hofher. "Tom Jones provides us with versatility on our defensive staff because of his background both within and outside of the MAC. Thomas Woods is a terrific addition to our staff as well. He has instant credibility with our players because of his outstanding playing background at Tennessee and as a coach of very successful wide receivers at Western Carolina University."
