Two UB Football Players Honored by MACBUFFALO, NY - A pair of University at Buffalo football players - senior tight end Brandon Shaughnessy (Stafford, NY/LeRoy) and junior outside linebacker Duane Williams (Detroit, MI/Denby) - were honored as part of the Mid-American All-Conference football teams on Monday. Shaughnessy was selected as the second team tight end after an outstanding senior season, while Williams earned honorable mention honors after a breakout junior campaign, his first at UB after transferring from Vermilion (MN) Junior College and sitting out last season as a redshirt. Shaughnessy, who played in every game in his four-year career, finished the season with 21 receptions for 240 yards (11.4 per catch) and saw 13 of his catches go for first downs. An outstanding blocker as well as receiver, Shaughnessy helped the Bulls average 322.8 yards of total offense per game in 2000. A captain during his final season at UB, Shaughnessy has also been nominated by Buffalo as its Vern Smith Award nominee, an award that goes to the conference's Most Valuable Player. Williams, meanwhile, made a huge impact on the Bulls' defense in his first season in the Blue & White. Williams was a big-play specialist who finished the season with 53 total tackles (40 solos), 15 of them for losses for 91 yards, nine sacks, three interceptions, six passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Williams' nine sacks ranked tied for fourth all-time for a single season in UB history and he broke the school record with four sacks in UB's first-ever MAC win, a 20-17 victory over Bowling Green. In all, Williams was responsible for six turnovers that UB gained while playing in all 11 games. The 6-2, 245-pound junior also ranked second in the conference in sacks and third in the conference in tackles for loss. The Bulls finished the season 2-9 overall and 2-4 in the MAC East Division,
good for fourth place in their second season in the conference. Last year, UB
had just one representative (Drew Haddad, second team wide receiver) on the
All-MAC teams. |
