UB Weekly Football Press ConferenceQuotes from UB press conference on Tuesday November 6th, 2001
Army head coach Todd Berry On the progress of his Army team: "We are disappointed because we've been in some games, and we just don't know quite how to win yet. Although I'm seeing some signs that our players are starting to gain some confidence in their abilities to compete at this level and compete in our schemes." On his Army's offense: "Offensively, we are starting to find ourselves. When you convert from a wishbone style offense to the one we are currently running there's an awful lot of basic fundamentals that need to be relearned. I like our progress." On his Army's quarterback, Chad Jenkins: "I have been very proud of Chad (Jenkins) because of the fact that there were some basic concepts of facing coverages and throwing the football that none of our quarterbacks had any comprehension of. He's got great leadership skills, and I've been pleased with his ability to throw the ball when the other team knows we're throwing the football. He's really grown tremendously along those lines." On Army's numerous turnovers this season: "You're not going to win games if you continue to turn the football over. But, we're going to be aggressive, and when you're aggressive sometime that happens a little more. But, (being aggressive) is the only way you can make plays to win games."
UB head coach Jim Hofher On the UB victory over Ohio: "Ohio had rushed on everybody, as evidenced by coming into the game third in the nation in rushing. In the end, it just all happened to fall together. We finished drives with touchdowns, we possessed the ball keeping their offense off the field, and we got turnovers. We did a dynamic job." On the Army offense: "I think they have done a terrific job. They're a very imposing offense. (Army quarterback Chad Jenkins) is a very productive guy, an aggressive player and runner. They do some things extremely well. I think they do an excellent job, and we are going to be greatly challenged this week." On the Army defense and what UB needs to do: "Defensively we'll see an eight-man front, which is designed to stop the run. Yet, we've got to figure out a way to be able to run the football. When we do that, it opens up more things for us in our playbook, and it opens up playaction. It all starts with being able to run the football."
UB senior quarterback Joe Freedy (MAC East Offensive Player of the Week)
On not turning the ball over in the past two weeks: "It has been an up-and-down season for me. I've turned the ball over a lot, but these last two weeks I haven't. Ball security is always one of our main goals. Like coach (Hofher) always says, 'If you don't turn the ball over you have a great chance to win.'" On his team putting two halves together: "This season, we've played a good half here and a bad half there. You can't win like that. We've talked about getting points on the board early and often." On continuing to work hard and win games: "One week isnt good enough. It's great that we won - and by that margin (44 points). But one week isn't going to show everyone that we are a great team - we haven't arrived yet."
UB senior defensive tackle Omari Jordan On his the UB victory over Ohio:
"At this level, dominating a team as good as Ohio - especially with their great rushing attack - is special. It means a lot, especially to a senior. I was really proud of the way we played. It was a great feeling" On continuing to work hard and win games: "If you want to keep getting better, you've got to keep fighting and crawling." On preparation for the next game following a victory: "In football, you enjoy the fruits of a victory over the weekend. But come Monday at practice, we all knew we've got a tough opponent ahead in Army. We knew we had to get back down to business, and put that victory behind us." | ||||||||||||||||||
