Ben Woods Named a Finalist For the Ray Guy Award
“This is a great honor for our football program, our University and for Ben," head coach Turner Gill said. "This recognition is well-deserved because I can’t think of another punter in the nation that I’d rather have on my team. He has shown great consistency and has routinely changed games for us with his ability to flip field position.” This season, Woods is averaging a career-best 42.3 yards per punt. His 18 punts downed inside the 20-yard line are tied for second in the Mid-American Conference. Of his 46 punts on the season, only 13 have been returned. Woods holds the school record for career punts with 265 and yardage with 10,414. He is also the nation’s active leader in punts and punting yards and currently ranks fifth in the history of the Mid-American Conference in career punting yardage. The Ray Guy Award is determined by a national selection committee made up of sports writers, college football coaches, sports information directors, past Ray Guy Award winners, and members designated by the Greater Augusta Sports Council. Among the statistics used to identify the Ray Guy Award winner are total yardage punted, number of times a punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, net average, average return yardage, and percentage of punts not returned. It is also of importance for the award winner to display team leadership, self-discipline, and to have a positive impact on the team’s success.
The three finalists will be announced in late-November. The winner, as always, will be presented during the Home Depot/ESPN National College Football Awards show on Thursday, December 6.
