Bulls to Host High-Powered Bowling Green
UB (0-5) is coming off a hard-fought defeat against MAC foe Akron by the score of 13-7. The UB defense held Akron scoreless through the first three quarters before the Zips rallied for 13-unanswered points. The MAC’s top-ranked pass defense stepped up once again last Saturday, holding Akron to only 145 yards through the air and 224 total yards. Junior DB Ramon Guzman (Bronx, NY/DeWitt-Clinton) is one of the leaders of the Bulls’ pass defense with 29 tackles, a sack and two pass breakups. “Right now we’re at the top of the MAC in pass defense and we really take pride in staying up there,” Guzman said. “It all starts with the defensive line putting pressure on the quarterback and it makes our job easier in the secondary, where their quarterback will not have time to get his reads and the receivers won’t have time to get open.” The Bulls defensive line is led by senior DE Aaron Sanders (Clarence, NY/St. Joseph’s) who has accumulated 27 tackles including 7.5 for a loss and four sacks so far this season. The Bulls hope to keep improving their offense against the Falcons. In its last three games, Buffalo has averaged 282 yards of total offense, a great improvement from the previous two games. Freshman QB Drew Willy (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) will once again get the starting nod. Willy has totaled 359 yards passing and two touchdowns in his previous two starts. Bowling Green (3-2) defeated Ohio, 38-14, last weekend. The Falcons are a pass-heavy offense averaging 362.4 passing yards per game which ranks them third in the nation. Bowling Green’s passing attack is led by junior All-American QB Omar Jacobs who has thrown 64 touchdowns and only seven interceptions through 21 games in his collegiate career. His 19 touchdowns this season are the second most in the nation. Leading the receiving corps for Bowling Green are senior wide outs Charles Sharon and Steve Sanders. The duo has combined for over 5,000 career receiving yards and 52 touchdowns. “We’ve got to bring a competitive fight Saturday,” head coach Jim Hofher said. “Our defensive pursuit needs to be as tenacious as it has ever been.”
Kickoff is slated for 1:30 pm on Saturday afternoon. Tickets are available at the UB ticket office or by calling 716-645-6666. The game can be heard on WGR 550 AM in Buffalo, WHTK 1280 AM in Rochester or on the web at www.buffalobulls.com.
