Weekly Football Press Conference Quotes

With Coach Jim Hofher and tailback Marquis Dwarte

Quotes (October 9, 2001) from the Weekly Press Conference

UB head coach Jim Hofher

On UB running back Marquis Dwarte:

"Marquis has been extremely consistent in many ways. He’s been a tremendously competitive for us so far this season. He continues to play as hard as he possibly can. He’s not a big guy, but he’s a big competitor."

On any changes in his philosophy/strategy over the course of the season:

"There are always going to be adjustments made on the run — changes in strategy. But in terms of my philosophy, there have been absolutely no changes at all. The things that will to cause us to win this week and any other week are the same things that would’ve caused to win in the first game.".

On the positives of UB’s football team thus far:

"I don’t think there’s any doubt that the scrappiness, the grit, and in many ways the performance of our defense has been a positive. I won’t say it’s been a surprise, but our defense has been the best area on our football team."

On the Marshall offense and the attack UB’s defense has to take:

"They are a dynamic offense, and arguably a quarterback (Byron Leftwich) that many feel could be the best one in the country. He’s exceptional. We’ve got to play our game — play very smart and very tough. We also have to disrupt their offense."

On what the UB offense needs to improve on:

"We’ve been inconsistent. We have not won the line of scrimmage enough. We’ve got to be able to run the ball better — because we have not done that with any level of consistency. We just need to improve in that area"

On the UB injury situation:

"Dallas Pelz’ ankle is a lot better. Andre Forde is OK, he practiced last night (Monday). We are in pretty good shape otherwise. There is nobody that we have who has played that we wouldn’t anticipate playing Saturday."

On the UB offensive line play:

"I think the offensive line has done a decent job to this point. There’s effort there, and they work hard, so I’m not going to point the finger at them. Nor should anybody on the team, or outside the team. They’ve played hard to this point, just as the rest of our team has. The success hasn’t always been there, but the effort has — eventually the success will come."

On where UB has made the most strides so far this season:

"I think generally the team is much better. Defensively, we’ve played very well. Offensively, I think we will come along. We are still making a lot of execution mistakes that can and will be fixed. It’s just a matter of time. We are getting better week in week out."

On where UB needs to make improvements:

"Offensively we need to control the ball a little more, and move it a little more. We also have to score points when we have the opportunity. We haven’t done that to this point but we are working towards that."

On the Marshall defense, and the challenges presented to UB:

"They are often in a 4-4 front, so they obviously want to stop the run. That makes it tough for us to run the ball. But, a defensive scheme is only as good as how well it is run. They are very athletic, but we can only be concerned about what we’re going to do and how we’re going to do it."
