Quotes from UB’s Weekly Media Luncheon for Miami game week

From head coach Jim Hofher and players Jamie Guerra and Chad Bartoszek

UB head coach Jim Hofher

With injury updates:

On sophomore kicker Dallas Pelz:

"He’s healthy and fine. In our pre-game warm-up, as he landed after the kick he rolled his kicking foot ankle."

On sophomore linebacker Lamar Wilcher:

"There’s no reason why this shouldn’t be a good week of practice getting ready to be able to play in this football game (versus Miami). (Monday) was the first practice he’s had in two weeks. He ran around and did everything as normal."

On sophomore wide receiver Zeke McKine:

"Zeke was taking care of some personal matters and practiced last night."

On Miami redshirt freshman quarterback Ben Roethlisberger:

"He’s impressive on tape and he has been impressive in the games that he’s played. He’s big and tall and has played with a lot of poise in each of the four games they’ve played. I think he’s been really accurate. They’ve got veterans in their offensive line, and no doubt that’s a good combination for a young quarterback. They’ve also been able to take stress off their quarterback running the ball well at times."

"I think he’s very athletic. He can be damaging with his feet, as well as with his arm. He’s a strong runner. We’ll need to do a great job wrapping him up with not only with our first tackler, but our second and more."

On Miami’s defense:

"They are a 4-3 defense. They are very good and aggressive. They’ve got an enormous nose tackle — Ryan Terry — who is listed at 6’2" and 327 pounds. So he’s a big man in the middle and plays a defensive tackle position. Their secondary has some big guys that cover well and are good tacklers in the open field."

On keys to UB success:

"When we have been really good with the football on offense in terms of ball security, we’ve given ourselves a chance. When we’ve got takeaways on defense, we’ve had a chance. When we have performed our best at the line of scrimmage, we’ve had success. When we’ve played well on special teams, we’ve had good success. No doubt that’s going to be the same. So we’ve got to be a physical team, a smart team, really protect the football and see if we can get the football from them, tackle great on defense — it really doesn’t change from week-to-week"

"You have to be a complete team and play a complete game to win. We are going to have to do that on defense, offense, and on special teams."

UB junior tight end Chad Bartoszek

On lining up in different offensive positions:

"I like the fact that I get to move around a little bit and be all over the field. Now I get to move around off the ball and play in a receiver’s spot at times."

On the struggles of the UB offense:

"We’ve got to come together and start to jell sometime soon. I think once we pick it up we’ll really start getting it done."

UB junior defensive end Jamie Guerra

On the UB defense being on the field a lot:

"It’s really tough. But we are conditioned very well, and that helps a lot. I think that’s why we’ve played so well in the second half."

On the success of the UB pass defense:

"We’ve been able to get to the quarterback fairly well. We haven’t had that many sacks but we’ve been pressuring them a lot. Our secondary is excellent, and does a heck of a job back there. They’ve got a lot of speed and a lot of ability.

On the UB defense as a whole:

"I think our defense is definitely coming around, and has been one of our strong points. As soon as everyone can become sound in their gaps and with their responsibilities, I think we’re going to become a really good defense."
