Quotes from Weekly Football Press Conference

With Coach Jim Hofher and players Tim Hedges and Dallas Pelz

Quotes from UB’s press conference on Tuesday September 25th, 2001

From UB head coach Jim Hofher

On UB kicker Dallas Pelz:

"He scored 13 points for us. That’s two touchdowns. That’s tremendous production, and helps greatly."

On UB offensive lineman Tim Hedges:

"He is having a significant impact on our football team. It showed up Saturday in terms of Tim having the largest number of knockdowns of our offensive lineman. He is also having a tremendous impact on the attitude of some of the other players — and pushing them, as well as continuing to push himself."

On the victory over UCONN:

"We’re excited about the victory. The stakes rise a little bit in the very next game."

"When you practice well, you’ve got a chance to play well. And I think we did that, especially in the second half of the football game."

On Central Michigan’s James King:

"The guy had four punt blocks in one game. That will snap you to real fast. He’s excellent. He’s an explosive guy. We definitely have to be aware of where he is."

On Central Michigan’s defense:

"Defensively, Central Michigan is very quick, and very aggressive in their calls. They’re not big, but they play big because of how aggressively they play."

On Central Michigan's offense:

"On offense, CMU is massive. They may end up being the biggest team we face all year with the heights and weights of their offensive lineman up front. They are really big from tackle to tackle."

On success carrying over from the UCONN win:

"Each game is unrelated. Our players should have confidence. It means they can do it again, but doesn’t guarantee they will do it again.

On UB quarterback Joe Freedy’s solid effort:

"I think it is a direct correlation to practice. I think Joe really worked to practice better since the previous outing. I think it showed up in the game. He saw things well. He executed the plays that were called in the offense. He really did an excellent job in the second half of the football game — he kept his poise, kept playing hard."

On quarterbacks Freedy and Randall Secky splitting time again:

In terms of practice, yes. In terms of the game, today is Tuesday so we will see. But Joe, based on his performance in the last game, is certainly the guy that will be the starter."

On rotating players in the UCONN game:

"We played 50 guys in the game, which is the most we played so far. We played 47 and 48 in the other games."

On use of the no-huddle offense versus Central Michigan:

"We have it available, and when it’s appropriate we should have no problem utilizing it."

From UB senior offensive lineman Tim Hedges

On the UCONN victory:

"We will take this victory and use the momentum through the rest of the season. We bounced back; it shows the character of this team."

"We were running and attacking the defense, and were able to do that the entire second half. We just continued to wear them out."

On the Central Michigan defense:

"Central Michigan lines up in a 4-4 defense, they stack up against the run. We’re going to have to throw the ball. They attack a lot, so we’ll have to get a big play here and there."

On the team’s focus now:

"It’s been quite a while since we have won two games in a row. And that is definitely the main focus right now, to play as well as we did last week again this week."

On returning to Buffalo for a home game:

"We have great fans in Buffalo and would definitely like to give them something to cheer about at home. We’d like to show them that we are going to compete every week."

From UB kicker and MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week Dallas Pelz

On his confidence boost from the UCONN game:

"After I hit my first field goal, everything felt a lot more smooth. I was definitely a lot more confident."

On his numerous kickoffs for touchbacks:

"Since last year my leg swing has gotten a lot stronger. I’ve worked on that a lot."

On playing a home game this week:

"As we are winning and getting more confident we are going to get a lot better, especially at home."
