Williams Earns MAC Defensive Player of Week

Junior from Detroit set school record with four sacks in win over Bowling Green

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo outside linebacker Duane Williams (Detroit, MI/Denby) earned Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday for his record-setting performance in the Bulls' 20-17 win over Bowling Green on Saturday night at UB Stadium.

Williams, a 6-2, 240-pound junior, set a new school record with four quarterback sacks and finished the game with six tackles (five solos) and a forced fumble. Williams insured UB's first Mid-American Conference victory with a pair of sacks on Bowling Green's final possession after the Bulls had taken a 20-17 lead with 1:27 remaining.

On second-and-10 at the Bowling Green 27-yard line, Williams dropped BG quarterback Ricky Schneider and forced a fumble that the Falcons finally recovered at their own 11. Then on 4th-and-28, Williams sealed the deal with his fourth sack of the night, ending UB's 18-game losing streak and giving Buffalo its first Division I-A win since 1970 - UB's final year at the major college level before returning last year.

Williams becomes UB's second MAC Player of the Week honoree as safety Craig Rohlfs (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) earned the award last season after intercepting three passes at Kent State.

Williams transferred to Buffalo from Vermilion Junior College in Minnesota and redshirted last season. He currently leads the team with five sacks on the season and ranks fourth in total tackles with 20.
