Gerald Carr Selected To Participate In the 2006 NCAA Expert Coaches Academy
The Expert Coaches Academy is one of the NCAA's initiatives that address the critical shortage of ethnic minorities in head coaching positions in the sport of college football. Of the current 117 Division I-A head football coaches, five are African-American, including first-year Buffalo coach Turner Gill. The mission of the Expert Coaches Academy is to assist the coaches with career advancement, networking and exposure opportunities, and to raise awareness regarding the substantial pool of talented and qualified coaching candidates. Most of the participants have the experience in years that elevate them to the consideration level for head coaching positions. "Coach Carr is an intelligent person," said Gill. "He is phenomenal in knowing all of the details of offensive football. It is great to see him be selected for this outstanding program." Carr is a 25-year veteran of coaching in both the college and professional levels, recently serving the last three as an assistant coach at Baylor. Carr also spent four seasons as wide recievers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, where he helped the Eagles to two playoff runs. Carr joins 24 other coaches from the assistant coaching ranks of college football, including three other coaches from Mid-American Conference institutions. Also representing the MAC are Jon Carr, wide receivers coach at Toledo, Ernest Jones, an assistant coach at Central Michigan and George McDonald, who serves as Western Michigan's defensive coordinator. The coaches will participate in workshops during the three-day program that focus on communication, fiscal responsibility, building a successful football program, compliance and academics. "It's an honor to be selected in this elite group of coaches," Carr said. "I believe my selection shows that Buffalo football is heading in the right decision and Coach Gill has surrounded it with high-caliber coaches." |
