Two Bulls Chosen in CFL DraftBUFFALO, NY - A pair of University at Buffalo football players - one present and one past - were chosen in the Canadian Football League College Draft last week. Defensive back Youdlain Marcellus (Longueiul, Quebec/Vanier Prep), a three-year letterwinner who finished his career last fall at Buffalo, and tight end/fullback Marvin Brereton (Mississaugua, Ontario/Clarkson Secondary), who has one year of eligibility left with the Bulls, were both taken in the fifth round of the CFL draft.
Marcellus, 5-10, 201, was drafted by the Ottawa Renegades in the fifth round, the 37th player taken overall. The Quebec native played in all 22 games over his final two seasons, starting four games over that time. Last fall he recorded 28 tackles (13 solos) while backing up both the free and strong safety spots and seeing plenty of special teams action. He started the final game of the year versus Akron. As a junior, he also recorded 28 total tackles - two of them for losses - and forced a fumble at Rutgers. He came to UB from Vanier Prep where he was named to Quebec's Under-19 All-Star team. He will graduate in May from UB with a degree in Communications. Brereton, meanwhile, was eligible for the draft because his high school graduating class is five years removed. However, the Ontario native was granted a sixth-year of eligibility by the NCAA after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the opener against Rutgers. Brereton was taken two selections after Marcellus, 39th overall by the Toronto Argonauts.
Brereton, 6-2, 245, is expected to play tight end for the Bulls this fall, but has also seen action at tailback and fullback in his career. The outstanding athlete had an excellent season as a junior, starting four games at fullback while also playing a major role on special teams. He averaged 5.4 yards per carry and was often the lead blocker for the Bulls. He has earned three letters during his Bulls' career and has seen action in 32 games. An English major, Brereton came to UB from Clarkson Secondary where he led his team to
the Metro Bowl title by rushing for a game-record 267 yards while being named the game's Most
Valuable Player during his senior season. |
