Blue Rallies Past White, 24-23, in Spring Scrimmage

Two fourth quarter touchdowns are difference in Blue comeback

BUFFALO, NY - The Blue team rallied with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat the White, 24-23, in the annual University at Buffalo spring football scrimmage at UB Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Redshirt freshman Demetrius Austrum (Coral Springs, FL/Taravella) gave the White team a 23-10 lead late in the third quarter when he returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown before the Blue roared back. Sophomore tailback Bam McDonald (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) scored on a 10-yard run to cut the lead to 23-17 early in the fourth quarter and junior running back Derrick Gordon (Brooklyn, NY/August Martin) gave the Blue its winning touchdown with a four-yard touchdown run with 2:21 left.

The White, behind the passing of junior Mike Gaydosz (Ellwood City, PA/Riverside), moved the ball to the Blue 33 before a 50-yard field goal by redshirt freshman Dallas Pelz (Holland, NY/St. Francis) missed on the last play of regulation. Gaydosz finished the day 12-of-23 for 118 yards and a touchdown - an 11-yard strike to Rychard Dykes (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) that gave the White the lead in the second quarter.

The Blue opened the scoring with a 13-play march on their first possession, capped by a three-yard pass from quarterback Mike Taylor (Elma, NY/Iroquois) to Dahnel Singfield (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar). Taylor finished 14-of-19 for 160 yards passing while Singfield led all receivers with eight catches for 58 yards.

The White responded with three defensive scores to take the lead. After a safety and the Gaydosz to Dykes touchdown, junior Chris Shelly (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) picked up a fumble and sprinted 22 yards for a score to make it, 16-7, in favor of the White. Blue kicker Scott Keller (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central) cut the lead to 16-10 with a 42-yard field goal before Austrum's interception return for a score gave the White a seemingly comfortable 23-10 lead.

McDonald led the Blue team with 31 yards rushing while sophomore Andre Forde (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had three catches for 59 yards. The Blue defense was led by Mark Graham (Monroe, MI/Monroe) who had seven tackles, including one for loss. Chris Gray (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg) added five tackles while Duane Williams (Detroit, MI/Denby) had two quarterback sacks and a pass breakup.

For the White, senior Theron Walker (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) led the way with 33 yards rushing while redshirt freshman Alan Steinman (Greensburg, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) had three catches for 27 yards. Defensively, the White was led by sophomore Youdlain Marcellus' eight tackles while linebacker Brandon Jordan (Huntington Beach, CA/Edison) had six tackles. Sophomore corner Mike Lambert (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) had a 37-yard interception return while Lorenzo Jones (Winter Haven, FL/Lakes Region) had two sacks.

The Bulls, who open their 2000 season on Saturday, Sept. 2 at Syracuse, begin fall practice on Aug. 13.
