Offense Shines in Blue White Scrimmage

Willy leads offense to 73-59 win over defense

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo football team held its annual Blue White Scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at UB Stadium. Using a scoring system that allowed both the offense and defense to score points, the offense (blue) defeated the defense (white), 73-59, in front of over 500 fans.

Drew Willy (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) looked sharp as the senior signal caller went 16-of-22 for 197 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown was a four-yard slant to Naaman Roosevelt (Buffalo, NY/St. Josephâs). The junior wideout finished the day with six catches for 44 yards.

James Starks (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) was limited to two carries on the afternoon as the reserves saw the bulk of the action. Brandon Thermilus (Flower Mound, TX/Marcus) stood out among the running backs with 91 yards on 12 carries. He scored on a 16-yard touchdown run.

Ike Nduka (White Plains, NY/White Plains) had a 30-yard touchdown run and finished the day with 37 yards on seven carries.

Ernest Jackson (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) had four catches for 66 yards, including three grabs of 18 yards or more. Terrell Jackson (Temple, TX/Temple) had three catches for 37 yards and Alex Pierre (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) had a pair of grabs for 50 yards.

Also seeing time at quarterback were redshirt-freshman Ed Young (Fort Worth, TX/Eastern Hills) and walk-on Cory Jorgensen (Williamston, MI/Williamston). Young completed five passes for 98 yards on the afternoon, but opened eyes with his running ability, scampering for 26 yards and running the option offense. Jorgensen completed 7-of-17 passes for 63 yards.

Defensively, the Bulls were led by sophomore linebacker Jerry Housey (Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy) who had a game-high 7.5 tackles. Redshirt-freshman linebacker Raphael Akubundo (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) and All-MAC First Teamer Davonte Shannon (Jeannette, PA/Jeannette) each added 5.5 tackles.

Sherrod Lott (Plant, City, FL/Plant City) had three tackles and one of the highlights of the day, an interception of Jorgensen that he returned 24 yards for a touchdown.

The defense had five sacks on the afternoon, led by redshirt-freshman defensive end Gordon DuBois (Andover, MA/Andover) who notched a pair.

"I think you got to see our guys having fun and enjoying both sides of the ball," said head coach Turner Gill. "I am trying to prepare our players on how to think of having high expectations. We believe and are confident because their in our system now for the third spring. Our guys are exemplifying a lot of confidence."

Buffalo will open the 2008 season by hosting UTEP on August 28 at UB Stadium.
