Blue Posts Shutout In Spring Scrimmage

Dwarte rushes for 60 yards to lead Blue team to 14-0 win over White at UB Stadium

BUFFALO, NY - Sophomore tailback Marquis Dwarte (Baltimore, MD/Perry Hall) ran for a game-high 60 yards and scored a touchdown as the Blue defeated the White, 14-0, in the annual University at Buffalo spring football scrimmage at UB Stadium.

The game was a defensive struggle throughout after members of the Bulls picked rosters for the game on Sunday night. Neither team scored until the Blue got a one-yard touchdown plunge from Tom Shaughnessy (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy) to open the scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter. That came one play after Dwarte caught a screen pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Randall Secky (Maple Grove, NY/Maple Grove) and was knocked out at the one foot line. The drive capped an 11 play, 75-yard drive.

Dwarte capped the scoring with 6:20 left on a three-yard dash off the left side to cap a six play, 26-yard drive following a fumble recovery by Chris Bonner (Philadelphia, PA/Oxford). Secky finished the night 7-of-19 for 63 yards while going the whole way for the Blue team.

The White team was paced by two-year starter Joe Freedy, who was 8-for-10 for 67 yards but was sacked three times. The Blue defense recorded five sacks on the night, including two each by Omari Jordan (Cleveland, OH/Collingwood) and Terrance Dawson (Warren, OH/Warren G. Harding). Cornerback Geoff Terry (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) had three tackles and a forced fumble for the Blue defense as well.

The White defense got seven tackles from linebacker Hank Pirowski (Buffalo, NY/Traditional) and four tackles from captain Bob Dzvonick (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler), including three for losses. Defensive back J.J. Gibson (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) had three tackles and two pass breakups for the White as well.

The scrimmage concludes UB's spring practice schedule under first-year coach Jim Hofher. The Bulls will open the 2001 season on August 30th against Rutgers of the BIG EAST. Game time is 7:30 pm at UB Stadium.
