Spring Football Notes: Week 1

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo football team finished its first week of spring workouts with an 11-on-11 live scrimmage in full pads on Saturday afternoon at Walter Kunz Stadium. After the workout, first-year head coach Turner Gill took a few moments after the scrimmage to talk about his first week of practice with the team.

On the scrimmage:
"I think some guys responded pretty well. We just need to take a look at it on tape tonight and see what we're going to get going on Monday."

On standout players during the scrimmage:
"I thought, initially, right off the bat, sophomore Dwayne Reid (Summit, NJ/Summit) did a couple things and caught a couple passes. I think sophomore Bryan Kisabeth (Plymouth, MI/Divine Child) did, too. Senior defensive lineman Ted Rene (Nyack, NY/Nyack/Dean JC) made a couple knockdowns on some passes. Initially, that's my first reaction, but I know I'll look at the tape and notice things, too."

On the standout players during his first week:
"Rene has shown some good progress and done some good things. Kisabeth has done a few good things, too. Junior center Jamey Richard (Weston, CT/Weston) has been a steady guy and done a lot of good things."

On the first week of practice:
"I'm very pleased. I think the guys have worked hard. We had four days in a row, so it's a little bit tough on them the fourth day. Things are going well."

On his assistant coaches:
"The coaching staff is doing a tremendous job of putting together a great plan and putting together a great practice. They've been very energized and they are getting the kids taught to do things in a proper way. Our whole big thing is we want to compete. We want to compete every single play, every single day.

"I feel so good about the staff. The guys here, have done a great job. Obviously, initially, when we were doing recruiting, they did a great job. Now, putting together, they've put together a great plan, and good practice situations for our student-athletes on the football field, us teaching them how to do things correctly and teaching them life skills. I'm very excited about the coaching staff. We've got a ways to go, but I feel very good about us taking this opportunity."

On instilling a family philosophy into the program:
"We just want to get to know each other better, get pass the surface of knowing a name and that you play football. We want to learn about each other in a deeper way and create relationships, get a little bit of their culture and background, the things they like, the things we don't like. We're just trying to learn a little bit more about each other. The biggest thing we talk about is we just want everyone to share their experiences. We can learn from each other. "

On week two:
"We'll go Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday we'll have another scrimmage. We'll do a lot of plays in there and try to give it the environment of a game day. We'll look forward to that."

Other notes:
Junior Trevor Scott (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) has moved from tight end to defensive line. Senior Ramon Guzman (Bronx, NY/DeWitt-Clinton) has moved from safety to middle linebacker.
