Spring Football Notes: Week 1
Trevor Scott | BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo football team finished its first week of spring workouts with an 11-on-11 live scrimmage in full pads on Saturday afternoon at UB Stadium. After the workout, head coach Turner Gill took a few moments to talk about his first week of practice with the team.
On the difference between spring practice this year compared to last year:
I think the biggest difference is familiarity and knowing our schemes both offensively and defensively. Our guys are two steps ahead of where they were last year in their thinking and their movement.
On Saturday’s scrimmage:
I thought it was great from the standpoint that we didn’t turn the ball over offensively. Especially with today’s weather conditions. The guys came out here and focused very well in their first time out in full pads. It was good to see the defense come out and hit well. I was very pleased with the defense and the offense. Today was an overall good day for us in every aspect.
On players that stood out in the scrimmage:
One guy that continues to stand out is Trevor Scott (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam). He is an outstanding football player. He now has that one year under his belt at defensive end and now there is no hesitation. He understands the position and has played it a full 12 games. He has done well and I anticipate that he will continue to do well.
Drew Willy (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and Jamey Richard (Weston, CT/Weston) are doing really well. Drew really understands our offense.
James Starks (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) is another player that is standing out.
Two guys that are doing a lot of good things are tight ends Jesse Rack (Maspeth, NY/Christ the King) and Robert Yealu (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove).
On Naaman Roosevelt’s play at quarterback:
Naaman Roosevelt (Buffalo, NY/St. Joseph’s Collegiate) is coming along pretty well each day. It is only the third day right now, so there is a lot of thinking going on instead of just reacting and anticipating before you react.
On week two:
We are going to at least get a couple of days in of red zone practice. We will really try to focus on that part of the game. Defensively, we obviously want to try to keep offense out of the end zone and force them into turnovers or field goals. Offensively, we want to score touchdowns and not have to settle for field goals.
We are also going to focus on more specific areas of the game – situational football. We will focus on short yardage, goal line, third down plays and the red zone.
