Best Named UB Quarterbacks Coach

Texas native has spent past 14 seasons as offensive coordinator at Appalachian State

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo football coach Jim Hofher has announced that Rob Best has joined the Bulls' staff as quarterbacks coach.

Best has spent the past 14 seasons as the offensive coordinator at Appalachian State, one of the nation's most successful Division I-AA programs. During his tenure at Appalachian State, the Mountaineers had winning seasons in 13 of 14 years, claimed three Southern Conference titles, finished ranked in the top 10 nationally on eight occasions and made 10 NCAA playoff appearances including the past five seasons (1998-2002).

ASU's 2000 offense set numerous school records, including averaging a Southern Conference-best 34.1 points per game. During his tenure, Best coached 10 All-American selections and 22 first-team All-Southern Conference selections. The Mountainers were 115-55 in his 14 seasons in Boone, NC.

"We're very pleased that coach Best has agreed to join our coaching staff," said Hofher. "He brings with him a tremendous amount of experience, as well as production, as part of a multiple-conference champion and a regular Division I-AA playoff team at Appalachian State."

Best, a native of Dallas, TX, was a first-team All-City player at Thomas Jefferson HS and went on to earn three letters at Texas Tech. He began his coaching career in 1976 at the University of North Texas as tight ends and assistant offensive line coach. He later coached the offensive line at North Texas from 1979-80 before returning to his alma mater to coach tight ends, quarterbacks, running backs, offensive line and special teams at Texas Tech over the span of 1981-85.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Texas Tech in 1972 and went on to earn a Master of Education, Administration from North Texas in 1977. He is married to the former Gae Knowles and has three sons, Scott, Craig and Brian.
