Gill Adds Another Recruit To 2006 Class
Thermilus becomes the 15th player to sign a national letter of intent in Gill's first recruiting class. The day after national signing day (Feb. 2), Rivals.com pronounced the Bulls’ recruiting class as the fourth best in the Mid-American Conference, only the second time since Buffalo moved into the league in 1999 that UB has cracked the top five. Even more impressive is the fact that Gill and his staff had less than a month to pull this first class together. Thermilus – like several other members of Buffalo’s 2006 class – has outstanding bloodlines. The 5-11, 210-pound back is the son of long-time Houston Oilers running back Alonzo Highsmith, currently a college scout with the Green Bay Packers. Highsmith, who starred collegiately as a Miami Hurricane, worked with Gill and defensive coordinator Charlie Jackson with the Packers last year. Thermilus, who suffered through an injury-plagued senior season, was still a Texas Class 5A all-district selection and set a school-record with 251 yards rushing in one game. He averaged 5.5 yards per rush and scored 11 touchdowns for coach Randy Mayes. He has also lettered three times in track and field. He chose Buffalo for the “academics, the players and the coaching staff.”
“Brandon has tremendous bloodlines through his father and has many of the same physical traits, he is a strong runner with excellent speed,” said Gill. “He has played against tremendous competition at the highest classification of football in Texas.”
