Bulls Down Delaware State 40-30The Bulls have proven what an interesting game football is in the last two weeks. The Bulls had 500 yards of total offense two weeks ago but lost to Illinois State, 40-28. On Saturday, the Bulls were outgained 479-119 yards in total offense by Delaware State and won 40-30. The difference? In a word, turnovers. The Bulls had seven turnovers while forcing none at Illinois State. On Saturday, UB forced six turnovers and had none themselves in beating the Hornets. Buffalo jumped to a 20-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game, saw the Hornets rally to 20-14, before scoring the next 20 points to put the game away before Delaware State scored 16 points in the last seven minutes to make the score closer. To add to the strangeness of the game, the Bulls had three different scoring "drives" that consisted of one play, returned a fumble for a touchdown and had a wide receiver - Jamie Gasparre - intercept a pass. Senior tailback Anthony Swan (Kingston, NY/Kingston HS) had two one-yard touchdown runs and a 30-yard TD reception from Erik Rusin (Amherst, NY/Amherst Central) that helped break the game open. That leaves Swan with 144 points, 30 points behind Leeland Jones' school record 174 points.
The following play, Rusin hit freshman Brandon Shaughnessy (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy HS) from 16 yards out for his first career TD to put the Bulls comfortable in front. Senior linebacker Londell Young (Brooklyn, NY/Boys & Girls HS) led the UB defense with 10 tackles, a pass breakup and returned a first quarter fumble 28 yards for his first career touchdown. Ted McDuffie (Buffalo, NY/Grover Cleveland) had six tackles, two pass breakups and an interception for the Bulls. |
