Bulls Grind Out Win Over Golden Griffins

Buffalo improves to 4-3 with first shutout since 1991 season

The University at Buffalo ground out a school record 486 yards on the ground and posted their first shutout since 1991 in dominating crosstown rival Canisius College, 47-0, before a crowd of 20,079 on Saturday night at UB Stadium.

The Bulls (4-3) also had a school-record 628 yards of total offense in the game. The last shutout that the Bulls had posted was a 49-0 win over Duquesne on Nov. 2, 1991. Fullback Josh Roth (Conewango Valley, NY/Pine Valley) led the potent UB running game with a career-high 111 yards on 17 carries and scored his ninth touchdown of the season.

Sophomore tailback Theron Walker (Pickering, ONT/Dunbarton) added a career-high 96 yards on 13 carries while freshman David Schmidli (Ransomville, NY/Wilson) had 12 carries for 74 yards as UB averaged an impressive 7.5 yards per carry.

The Bulls put the game away near the end of the first half with some trickery. Senior split end Kali Watkins (Rochester, NY/W. Irondequoit) - who had scored earlier on a 30-yard reverse - tallied his second rushing touchdown of the game on a 52-yard run off a fake punt with just :03 to go before halftime.

Junior flanker Drew Haddad (Westlake, OH/St. Ignatius) had a pair of touchdowns, a 40-yarder from Chad Salisbury (Newell, PA/Frazier) in the second quarter and a 17-yard strike in the third quarter.

The Bulls defense racked up a season-high four quarterback sacks in the game. Freshman linebacker Chris Shelly (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler HS) had eight tackles (five solos) while junior Josh Trexler (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) had eight tackles and his first interception of the season. UB also got interceptions from sophomores Jeff Lawrence (Austintown, OH/Austintown-Fitch) and Eric Pipkins (Pittsburgh, PA/Valley) in the game.

The Golden Griffins drove to a first and goal at the two late in the fourth quarter but were thwarted with two quarterback sacks and an interception by Pipkins on 4th-and-goal at the 17.

The Bulls travel to Lynchburg, VA next Saturday to face Liberty University. The Bulls will close with three out of their last four games on the road.
