Slick Places 91st at NCAA Meet

UB cross country runner completes season at Division I Championships

GREENVILLE, SC - University at Buffalo cross country runner Jerimie Slick (Rochester, NY/Greece-Olympia) placed 91st in a field of 244 racers at the NCAA Division I National Championship at Furman University in Greenville, SC. Slick completed the 10-kilometer course in 30:54.

The junior became the first UB athlete in over thirty years to compete in the NCAA Division I Championship. Previously, Ed Fuchs ran in three championship races from 1968-70 in what was known as the NCAA's University Division, the forerunner of today's Division I classification. UB's athletic programs moved down to the Division III level in the early 1970s before returning to Division I status in 1991.

Slick qualified for the national championships with his strong performance at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet in Boston on November 10. He finished eighth in a field of 249 runners completing the 10-kilometer course in 30:15.30. Additionally, Slick earned first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors at the MAC Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich. on Oct. 27, finishing sixth in 25:21.9 along the eight-kilometer course, his top time of the season at the distance.

Eastern Michigan junior and Kenyan native Boaz Cheboiywo, the only other MAC runner in the field, set a course record to win the individual title finishing in 28:47, breaking the previous record by seven seconds and finishing 19 seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Cheboiywo, who won the MAC title last month, became the second MAC individual champion following former Ohio star and current Bobcat coach Elmore Banton's 1964 title.

Colorado won the school's first team title with 90 points to edge second-place Stanford by a single point.

With the completion of the cross country season, Slick joins the Bulls' indoor track and field squad for competition this winter. He currently holds the UB indoor record for 5000 meters at 14:59.25, the only UB runner to eclipse the 15-minute barrier. UB opens the season at the Colgate Invitational on December 1.
