BRONX, NY – The University at Buffalo’s men’s and women’s cross country squads raced to respectable finishes at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet held Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park. UB’s men finished 12^th among 33 scoring teams with 327 points while the women took 14^th in a 35-team field with 475 points. The men’s team also won the SUNY Centers title by virtue of finishing ahead of Binghamton and Albany, the other SUNY schools in the field. The women’s team was second among SUNY schools finishing behind Stony Brook but ahead of Albany and Binghamton.

Jerimie Slick

UB senior Jerimie Slick (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) was the top men’s finisher in the race. He completed the 10K course in 31:32.8 to finish 16^th overall in a field of 223 runners.

Other UB’s men’s finishers included Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) in 43^rd place in 32:16.1, Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) in 63^rd place in 32:37.3 and Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in 80^th place in 32:58.9. Ben Cady (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) finished 125^th in 34:05.3, Brian Smith (Rochester, NY/East Rochester) finished 143^rd in 34:32.8 and Jeff Czyz (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West) took 151^st in 34:44.8 to complete the Bulls’ entries. Dartmouth’s Tom McArdle won the individual title in a 30:04.7 clocking.

Melissa Burrows

The UB women were led by senior Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) as she finished the 6K course in 22:28.8 to place 53^rd among the 238 runners.

Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) finished in 89^th in 23:16.2 and Jessica Moldovan (Warren, PA/Warren Area) was 93^rd in 23:20.3 to round out the Bulls’ top three individuals. Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was 123^rd in 23:48.8, Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) took 128^th in 23:52.4 and Megan Housel (Webster, NY/Webster) placed 148^th in 24:11.4. The individual title was won by Yale’s Kate O’Neill in 20:45.3.

Iona (men) and Columbia (women) won the team titles in close battles. Iona scored 59 points to finish two points ahead of second-place Providence in the men’s meet. Columbia (70) bested Providence (75) by five points to win the women’s title.
