Koeppel, Beatty Named to Cross Country Academic All-MAC Teams

Runners honored for athletic and academic efforts

BUFFALO, NY - Two University at Buffalo student-athletes have been named to the 2003 cross country Academic All-Mid-American Conference teams, the league has announced.

UB men's cross country runner Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) and women's runner Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) were selected to their respective teams as voted on by faculty athletic representitives at MAC institutions. The men's team honored six student-athletes, while the women's team included seven student-athletes due to a tie in the voting.

Beatty, a senior biochemistry major with a 3.71 GPA, was also selected to the league's Academic All-MAC indoor and outdoor track and field teams last season. Beatty turned in a top 8K time of 25:57.06 at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, PA on October 4. He also was UB's top finisher at the MAC Championships with an 8K clocking of 26:00.9 to place 50th among 96 runners.

Koeppel, a junior mathematics major with a 3.63 GPA, also earned All-MAC Second Team honors when she placed ninth at the league meet in Akron, OH on November 1 in a season-best 5K time of 17:50.3. She has been UB's top finisher in each of the seven meets she has entered with five top 10 finishes, including two victories and one second-place finish. Koeppel won the UB Open on October 11 in a 5K time of 18:36.5 and William and Mary's Tribe Open in 21:50.25 for 6K on October 18. Her earning of All-MAC status was the first by a UB women's cross country athlete since the Bulls joined the league in 1999.

UB tied for third with two athletes among the 13 named to the league's All-Academic squads. Central Michigan also placed a pair of women's runners, while Miami and Akron led the way with three honorees apiece.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

UB is back in action this Saturday when it travels to the NCAA Northeast Regional Meet to be held in Boston's Franklin Park.
