Squads Finish 18th at Northeast Regional Meets
The men's and women's cross country teams completed the 2007 campaign at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Boston's Franklin Park as both squads placed 18th in their respective fields. The UB women scored 565 points to place 18th in the 36-team field. The UB men posted a total of 550 points en route to their 18th-place finish in the 34-team men's competition.
High Finishes For Veith, Soblosky
Nicole Soblosky | UB's women had two finishers near the top of the pack. Junior Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) placed 38th among the 254 women’s runners in 21:46.25 for the 6K course. It was the third time this season that the UB women raced on a 6K course after meets at Michigan State and Lehigh. Joining Veith near the head of the list was sophomore Nicole Soblosky (Colonie, NY/Colonie). Soblosky turned in a 22:13.55 clocking, her best 6K performance of the season. She cut 24 seconds off her previous 6K best of 22:37 set at Lehigh's Paul Short Invitational earlier in the year.
Season-Best Marks For Several Runners
Megan Niblock | Jessica Schultz (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) finished 134th in 23:19.15 as the third scorer for the Bulls. Megan Niblock (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) placed 165th in a season-best 23:47.55. Amy Trumpfheller (Clarence, NY/Clarence) finished 180th in a season-best 24:11.25. Also competing for the Bulls were Susan Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) with a 24:45.45 for 205th place and Brittany Chilson (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) with a 24:52.30 for 210th place.
Giza Improves On Results in Final Race
Dan Giza | For the UB men, senior Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) topped the squad. Giza finished 79th in a field of 230 in 31:40.55 along the 10K course. The 10K distance is the longest covered by the Bulls this season with most men's meets going 8K. It was the final cross country meet of his career and on the same course that he competed on in 2005, he cut more than a minute and a half off his time when he finished 116th.
Other Runners Stay Within the Pack
Ryan Bloom | The remainder of UB's men's scorers stayed within striking distance of each other. Freshman Ryan Bloom (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) was UB's second finisher at 32:15.25 for 112th place. Rounding out the men's scorers were sophomore Jason Ayr (Westfield, MA/Westfield) in 32:21.70 for 116th place, sophomore Scott Dickover (Middletown, NY/Middletown) in 32:25.30 for 120th place and junior Dan Healy (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) in 32:43.35 for 136th place. Jesse Mang (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Jacob Hagen (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) also raced but did not score points. Mang was 152nd in 33:02.00 and Hagen was 162nd in 33:11.65.
Veith Named to Academic All-MAC Team
Mary Veith | The week began with Mary Veith earning Academic All-MAC cross country honors. The junior chemistry major with a 3.679 GPA was named to the team for the second straight season. She was also named to the indoor and outdoor track and field Academic All-MAC squads last season.
