BOSTON, MA – The University at Buffalo's men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday at Boston's Franklin Park as both squads placed 18th in their respective fields.

The UB women scored 565 points to place 18th in the 36-team field. The UB men posted a total of 550 points en route to their 18th-place finish in the 34-team men's competition.

UB's women had two finishers near the top of the pack. Junior Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) placed 38th in 21:46.25 for the 6K course. It was the third time this season that the UB women raced on a 6K course. Earlier in the week, Veith was named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference cross country team for the second straight year.

Joining Veith near the head of the list was sophomore Nicole Soblosky (Colonie, NY/Colonie). Soblosky turned in a 22:13.55 clocking, her best 6K performance of the season. She cut 24 seconds off her previous 6K best of 22:37 set at Lehigh's Paul Short Invitational earlier in the year.

Jessica Schultz (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) finished 134th in 23:19.15. Megan Niblock (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) placed 165th in a season-best 23:47.55. Amy Trumpfheller (Clarence, NY/Clarence) finished 180th in a season-best 24:11.25 to round out UB's scorers. A total of 254 women's runners comprised the field.

Providence won the women's team title with 73 points as Friars junior Danielle Doetzel took invidual honors in 20:28.00.

For the UB men, senior Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) topped the squad. Giza finished 79th in a field of 230 in 31:40.55 along the 10K course. The 10K distance is the longest covered by the Bulls this season with most men's meets going 8K.

The remainder of UB's men's scorers stayed within striking distance of each other. Freshman Ryan Bloom (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) was UB's second finisher at 32:15.25 for 112th place. Rounding out the men's scorers were sophomore Jason Ayr (Westfield, MA/Westfield) in 32:21.70 for 116th place, sophomore Scott Dickover (Middletown, NY/Middletown) in 32:25.30 for 120th place and junior Dan Healy (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) in 32:43.35 for 136th place.

Iona won the men's title with a 37-point effort. Providence's Max Smith held off teammate Hayden McLaren to win the individual title in 29:58.75 to McLaren's 30:00.95.
