Women finish 12th in Mid-American Conference Championships

OXFORD, OH - The University at Buffalo's men's and women's cross country teams raced in the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday at Miami University's Western Campus Course. UB's men finished sixth in a 12-team field with 170 points, but just 10 points shy of fourth place. UB's women placed 12th in a 13-team race with 305 points. Central Michigan, ranked eighth nationally, edged out seventh-ranked Eastern Michigan for the men's team championship, 39-40. Toledo breezed past the women's field with 51 points to win the title.

For the second consecutive season, UB senior Jerimie Slick (Rochester, NY/Greece-Olympia) earned first-team All-MAC honors with his finish at the league meet. Slick was UB's top men's runner, finishing third in a 99-runner field, in 24:09.40 for the 8K course. The time was his fastest this season, bettering his previous mark set at the NCAA Pre-Nationals two weeks ago by more than 25 seconds. Slick finished sixth at last season's meet in 25:21.9.

Joining Slick across the finish line for the Bulls were senior Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) in 25:26.60 to place 31st, junior Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley), in a season-best, 25:47.50 to take 41st place, and senior Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) in 25:49.10 for 44th place. Eastern Michigan's Gavin Thompson won the race in 23:50.20, defeating Central Michigan's Jake Flynn by 13 seconds.

In the women's 5K race, UB was paced by senior Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) in 18:37.60 to finish 32nd. Freshman Lindon Wilcox (Albion, NY/Albion) was 65th in 19:15.00, senior Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) was 69th in 19:16.10 and junior Jessica Moldovan (Warren, PA/Warren Area) was 73rd in 19:23.00. Toledo's Briana Shook won the individual title in 17:03.60 with teammate Sara Vergote finishing second in 17:21.20.

UB's postseason meets continue on November 16 when the Bulls head to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx for the NCAA Northeast Regionals. The race will also serve as the SUNY Centers Championships with all four of New York's Division I SUNY institutions (Buffalo, Binghamton, Albany and Stony Brook) expected to compete.
