Three Runners Named Academic All-MAC
Leonard selected for men's team; Corey and Veith named to women's team
BUFFALO, NY – Three University at Buffalo cross country runners have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference teams. The league announced the awards at its home office in Cleveland on Wednesday morning. Men's runner Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) was named to the men's team for the second consecutive year while women's runners Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston) and Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) earned their first nods to the women's list.
Andy Leonard | Leonard, a senior mechanical engineering major with a 3.434 GPA, picked up his second award in as many seasons. He finished first at the Toledo Invitational in 25:55 for 8K to lead the Bulls to the team victory at the meet on September 16. He also had a second-place finish at the UB Stampede Invitational in 27:10. At Saturday's MAC Championships, hosted by UB at Beaver Island State Park, Leonard was 24th in 28:49.30.
Karen Corey | Corey, a senior social sciences major with a 3.926 GPA, competed with the cross country program for the first year after a stellar four-year career with UB's rowing team. Corey finished 62nd in 22:20.50 at Saturday's MAC Championships. She set her top 5K mark of 19:42 to finish 19th at Cornell's Reif Memorial Invitational on October 20. Corey was also a two-time SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete recipient in 2005 and 2006 while with the rowing program.
Mary Veith | Veith, a sophomore chemistry major with a 3.879 GPA, was one of three women's runners to earn first team All-MAC and Academic All-MAC honors in the same season. UB's top women's runner throughout the 2006, Veith was the overall runner-up at Saturday's MAC Championship, turning in a time of 20:37.65, second to Ohio's Carime Reinhart, who also earned Academic All-MAC recognition. Veith also earned the MAC’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week award after winning the individual title at the Toledo Invitational, conquering the 5K course in 17:48, her fastest time this season. She also placed third in 18:28.30 at the UB Stampede Invitational as the Bulls’ top finisher and 14th among 237 runners at the Paul Short Invitational in a time of 21:14 for 6K.
There were 23 women's honorees and nine men's honorees on the 2006 list. The number is either set for a specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater. The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
