Men Finish Seventh; Women Ninth at MAC Championships

The Bulls competed in the Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday at Northern Illinois University. The UB men finished seventh in the nine-team field with 137 points, just two behind sixth-place Akron (135) and five behind fifth-place Central Michigan (132). The UB women accumulated 212 points to place ninth among 12 teams and hold off 10th-place Bowling Green (215). Eastern Michigan won the men's title with 39 points while Akron took the women's trophy with 41 points. A total of 77 men and 104 women crossed the finish line on Saturday. Miami's Dan Huling won the men's race in 24:21 while Akron's Beata Rudzinska took the women's title in 17:24.

Two runners earned All-Mid-American Conference honors for the Bulls at Saturday's meet. Junior runner Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) earned first-team All-MAC recognition with his seventh-place finish in the 8K men's race. McKenna, who led for the first two miles of the race, finished in 24:51. It was McKenna's fifth top-10 finish in his six races this season.

"He made the rest of the field run an honest race," said head coach Vicki Mitchell. "He did what he had to do."

Senior Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) garnered second-team All-MAC honors by placing 14th in the women's 5K race. She set a season-best mark with her 18:15 clocking, bettering her previous best by 10 seconds set at Toledo's Central Collegiate Meet on September 17.

"Jen Jezorski should be very pleased with her finish," said Mitchell.

The top seven finishers earned first-team All-MAC honors while the next seven were awarded second-team All-MAC recognition. Previously, the top 12 runners earned All-MAC, but the number was increased to 14 to reflect the seven racers each team could enter in the meet for scoring purposes.

Remainders of Field Finish Strong

Following McKenna, the next four Bulls crossed the finish line in the top half of the pack to give UB its 137-point total. Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) placed 23rd to finish second across the line for the Bulls in 25:55. Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) was 27th in 26:06. Dan Healy (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) was 37th in a season-best 26:27 and Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) rounded out UB's scorers with a 26:45 clocking to place 45th.

In the women's race, Alexsandra Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School in Poznan) was the second UB finisher in 18:51 to place 32nd overall. Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was 53rd in 19:15. Kelli O'Brien (Clifton Springs/Manchester-Shortsville) took 55th in a season-best 19:17 with Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) placing 63rd in 19:31.

Postseason Continues With Northeast Regionals

The postseason continues for the Bulls in two weeks when they travel to Boston to compete in the NCAA Northeast Regionals on November 12. At last season's meet in the Bronx, UB's women finished ninth as Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) placed seventh individually to earn All-Northeast honors. The UB men took 22nd among 34 schools.
