Cross Country Teams Place 7th and 11th at MACs

For the first time in school history the University at Buffalo cross country teams hosted the Mid-American Conference Championships. Under less than ideal conditions at Grand Island’s Beaver Island State Park, including rain, mud and heavy winds, the UB men placed seventh of the nine teams while the UB women took 11th in the 12-team women’s field.

UB sophomore Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was the overall runner-up behind Carime Reinhart of Ohio University. Veith turned in a time of 20:37.65, 35 seconds behind Reinhart to place second. Veith scored first-team All-MAC honors with her finish. The second-place finish is an incredible leap for Veith, who placed 63rd overall and was UB’s fifth finisher at last season’s meet in DeKalb, IL.

UB’s second finisher was senior Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) in 22:00.85 to place 47th overall among 101 women's runners. Senior Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston) was the Bulls’ third finisher in 22:20.50 for 62nd place.

Additional women’s racers included Jessica Schultz (Rochester, NY/Eastridge), finishing in 22:39.45 for 70th place. Jennie Donofrio (Pittsford, NY/Penfield) was 82nd in 23:10.60 with Christine Sprehe (Boston, NY/Orchard Park) 83rd in 23:11.95 and Aleksandra Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School in Poznan) taking 85th place in 23:17.65. Amy Trumpfheller (Clarence, NY/Clarence) placed 95th in 23:48.45 and Kristin Clark (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) was 97th in 23:55.00.

UB's top men’s finisher was senior Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) in 19th place in a time of 28:35.55. McKenna was a first-team All-MAC honoree at last season’s meet when he finished seventh overall.

Senior Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) was 24th in 28:49.30 and junior Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) was 38th in 29:34.15. A total of 76 runners consisted of the men’s field.

Joining UB’s top three men’s runners was Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius), finishing 43rd in 29:39.45. Jason Ayr (Westfield, MA/Westfield) was 51st in 30:06.20. David Welby (Somers, NY/Somers) was 55th in 30:17.20. Jesse Mang (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) was 64th in 30:43.75 with Dan Healy (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) right behind in 65th place in 31:00.10. Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson) finished 67th in 31:01.60.

Kate Kohout was named the Mid-American Conference’s Women's Runner of the Week following her performance leading up to the MAC Championships at the Cornell Reif Invitational. Kohout was UB's top finisher at the Cornell meet, finishing 10th overall in a field of 40 runners in 19:12, tying her season-best 5K mark which she set on September 12 at the University of Toledo Invitational.

Northeast Regionals Next on the Agenda

Up next for the Bulls is the NCAA’s Northeast Regional Championships, held this season at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The UB men finished 11th at last season’s meet while the women placed 16th in the competition at Boston’s Franklin Park. Dan McKenna earned All-Northeast honors with his 19th place individual finish.
