Sour Finishes For Bulls at MACs

The men's and women's cross country teams did not fare as well as expected at the Mid-American Conference Championships at Western Michigan on Saturday.

UB's men took 10th place in the field of 12 with 252 points, down a spot from last season's 9th place showing. The women's team placed 11th of 13 squads for the second straight year scoring 265 points for the meet.

Eastern Michigan won the men's team title with 38 points while Central Michigan took home the women's championship with 78 points.

For the men, Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) paced the Bulls finishing the 8 kilometer course in 25:26 good for 24th place among 95 runners. Ludden's time was his best of the season bettering his 25:40.15 clocking at the Paul Short Invitational.

Rick Stewart (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) placed 37th in 25:53 and Tony David (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was 47th in 26:12 to round out the top three for the men's squad.

Other UB racers included Mike Commisso (Fulton, NY/Fulton), 73rd in 27:18, Ben Moskel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), 81st in 27:53, Tom Stuart (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy), 88th in 28:12, Jeff Czyz (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore West), 90th in 28:14 and Joel Beatty (Holley, NY./Holley), 91st in 28:25.

UB's women were paced by Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) who finished the 5 kilometer race in 39th place in a season-best 18:31 bettering her previous best by nearly 45 seconds.

Eileen Rose (Latham, NY/Shaker) was 43rd in 18:40 bettering her season best by 23 seconds. Danielle Morrell (Oswego, NY/G. Ray Bodley) also improved on her season-best with an 18:51 clocking taking 54th place.

Other finishers for the women's team included Lisa Luce (Varysburg, NY/Attica), 64th in 19:02, Jessica Moldovan (Warren, PA/Warren Area), 70th in 19:11, Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell), 81st in 19:41 and Hollie Rhodes (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside), 84th in 19:51.

The squads will compete once more on November 11 at the NCAA Northeast Regionals to be held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, NY. The squads should be familiar with the course having raced in the Fordham Invitational September 16 at the same venue.

  • Men tied for first of 4 teams, 35 points
  • Women placed second of 4 teams, 46 points
