Eastern Michigan, Ohio Claim MAC Cross Country TitlesGRAND ISLAND, NY – The Eastern Michigan University men and Ohio University women claimed the team titles on Saturday as the Mid-American Conference Cross Country Championships were held at Beaver Island State Park. UB's men finished seventh among nine teams while the women placed 11th of 12 schools.
A soaking rain throughout Friday night caused the course on Grand Island to become muddy with constant 20-30 mph winds and temperatures in the low 40s during the races creating cold conditions for the runners. The rain dissipated during the men's race while the women's race was contested without rain. In the men's 8K championship, Eastern Michigan runners scored the first three places and five of the top 10 to clinch their 12th team title. EMU senior Corey Nowitzke won the men's individual title in 26:52.60, nearly 30 seconds ahead of his teammate and second-place finisher Josh Perrin (27:20.95). EMU's David Brent was third in 27:56.05. UB's top men's finisher was senior Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) in 19th place in a time of 28:35.55. Senior Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) was 24th in 28:49.30 and junior Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) was 38th in 29:34.15. A total of 76 runners consisted of the men's field. Ohio placed its five scorers among the top 15 placers to clinch their league-best ninth women's team title. Ohio junior Carime Reinhart won the women's individual 5K title in 20:02.90.
UB sophomore Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was the overall runner-up behind Reinhart, turning in a time of 20:37.65, 35 seconds behind Reinhart. Veith scored First Team All-MAC honors with her finish. The top seven finishers in the men's and women's races earn first team honors while the eighth through 14th-placers are named to the second team. UB's second finisher was senior Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) in 22:00.85 to place 47th overall among 101 women's runners. Senior Karen Corey (Kingston, NY/Kingston) was the Bulls' third finisher in 22:20.50 for 62nd place.
