Women's Runners Get Workout at Cornell Meet

The University at Buffalo sent selected runners to Cornell University's Reif Memorial Run on Friday afternoon. Four runners competed for the Bulls in the women's 5K race. No UB runners competed in the 8K men's event. There was no team scoring in the meet.

Quinn Improves Time to Pace Bulls

With four entrants from UB's B squad competing at the Cornell meet, the top finisher was sophomore Michelle Quinn (Oswego, NY/Oswego) in 24th place among the 39 runners. Quinn completed the course in 22:23.5, a season-best time, cutting her previous best by more than 45 seconds. Quinn turned in a 23:11.0 clocking at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational at Roberts Wesleyan the previous week.

Sophomore Amy Trumpfheller (Clarence, NY/Clarence) finished right behind Quinn in 22:33.8, good for 25th place. Other UB finishers included sophomore Susan Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley) in 30th place in 23:08.5 and senior Jen Redino (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) in 32nd place in 23:37.8.

Cornell runners finished in the top 10 spots in the women's race with Ruth Morgan winning individual honors in 19:31.6. Runners from Syracuse, Temple and Ithaca also competed.

The full contingent of UB runners will compete this weekend at the Mid-American Conference Championships in DeKalb, IL. The championships will be held at Northern Illinois University with races starting Saturday, October 29 at noon (ET). Last season, UB's women earned a fourth-place team finish, the highest ever for the squad as Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) earned All-MAC honors with her individual victory on the 6K course at Toledo. Kelli O'Brien (Clifton Springs, NY/Manchester-Shortsville) also earned All-MAC recognition with her 12th-place finish in the women's race. The top six finishers in both the men's and women's races are named to the first team while the next six comprise the second team. The UB men placed seventh in a 10-team field in 2004 as Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was the team's top finisher in 26th place among 82 runners.
