Wigton, Koeppel Capture Individual Titles

UB cross country teams give strong performances at Tribe Open

WILLIAMSBURG, VA - The University at Buffalo cross country teams swept individual honors as the Bulls competed at the Tribe Open hosted by the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA on Saturday. Only the women's race was scored for team results as the Bulls finished third with 78 points behind first-place Virginia (34) and host William and Mary (47). The men's event was not scored.

UB runners won both the men's 8K and women's 6K races among large fields of runners. UB sophomore Andy Wigton (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) took the men's race in 25:22.57 to finish six seconds ahead of the competition consisting of 107 runners. UB junior Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) took the women's race among a field of 82 racers with a 21:50.25 clocking, more than thirty seconds ahead of the second-place runner, Virginia's Shannon Hawrylo (22:21.18).

Other runners to finish for the Bulls in the men's race included senior Joel Beatty (Holley, NY/Holley), who placed 15th in 26:23.39 and freshman Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), who took 21st in 26:38.68. Ben Cady (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) was next for the Bulls in 26:52.80 for 30th place. Rounding out the UB contingent were Jeff Czyz (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) in 38th place in 27:06.08, Steve Strelick (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) in 43rd in 27:20.52, Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) in 49th place in 27:38.43 and Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) in 68th place in 28:43.98.

Joining Koeppel in the top 10 was Megan Housel (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) with her ninth-place finish in a season-best 22:55.68, cutting 22 seconds off her best 6K time of the season. Hollie Rhodes (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) was 19th in a season-best 23:23.64 while Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) and Jennie Donofrio (Penfield, NY/Penfield) were 26th and 27th, respectively. Jezorski crossed the line in 23:38.36 while Donofrio finished in 23:41.87, cutting her season-best by more than 35 seconds. Other finishers for the Bulls included Kayleigh Wheeless (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) in 35th place in 23:59.70, Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) in 36th place in a season-best 24:02.35 and Brigid Horigan (Galway, NY/Galway) in 46th place in 24:30.32.
