UB Cross Country Teams Place 14th at Penn State National Invitational

UB squads also race at Roberts Wesleyan meet on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo's men's and women's cross country teams were in action at both the Penn State National Invitational and Roberts Wesleyan's Harry F. Anderson Invitational on Saturday. UB's top runners raced in Pennsylvania while the remainder of the teams raced in Rochester.

At the Penn State meet, both UB's men's and women's squads finished 14th in their fields. There were 38 men's teams and 41 women's teams in the respective races. The UB women scored 433 points while Providence, ranked second on the Finishlynx national cross country poll, won the team title at 49 points with fifth-ranked Duke (60), No. 24 West Virginia (194) and No. 29 Boston College (198) taking the next three spots. American University won the men's team title with 49 points while the UB men scored 416 points.

In the women's 6K race, Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) was UB's top finisher. Koeppel completed the course in 21:26 to finish 20th among the field of 346 runners. Kelli O'Brien (Clifton Springs, NY/Manchester-Shortsville) and Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) also finished near the top of the pack. O'Brien turned in a 22:25 clocking to take 68th place while Jezorski finished in 22:28 to place 70th overall. Providence racers Kim Smith (19:46) and Mary Cullen (20:23) were the first two women across the finish line.

In the men's race, which covered 5.2 miles, UB's top finisher was Andy Wigton (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) in 28th place among 322 runners. Wigton crossed the finish line in 26:23. UB's Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was 86th in 27:04 and John Flor (Albion, NY/Albion) was 89th in 27:05. Unattached runner Ryan Sheehan won the race in 25:22 with Penn State's Dan Mazzocco finish in second in 25:27.

Meanwhile UB also sent team's to Rochester for the Harry F. Anderson Invitational. The UB men placed second with 65 points behind RIT's 37 points in the nine-team field. The UB women scored 203 points to place eight among 11 schools. Mercyhurst won the women's team title with 41 points.

UB freshman Chuck Laderer (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) was fifth in the men's 8K race, crossing the finish line in 26:42.2, a collegiate-best mark. Brian Smith (Rochester, NY/East Rochester) was 10th in 26:58.4. Tim Maxon (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) was 14th in 27:18.0 and Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) was 17th in 27:25.2. There were 108 runners in the men's race.

In the women's 5K race, UB's Susanna Cronmiller (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) was the top finisher in 20:41.5 to take 28th place. A total of 115 women competed in the race.

The squads are off next weekend. They travel to Toledo for the Mid-American Conference Championships on October 30.
