Slick Wins Mid-American Conference Award

UB cross country athlete named MAC Men's Runner of the Week

BUFFALO, NY - Senior Jerimie Slick (Rochester, NY/Greece-Olympia) of the University at Buffalo cross country squad has been named the Mid-American Conference Men's Runner of the Week as announced Tuesday by the conference office.

Slick led the Bulls to a first-place finish at Saturday's UB Open, setting a course record of 25:50 for the 8K race. The Bulls placed the first 12 runners in the 34-entrant race across the finish line to ensure a perfect 15 point score to easily outdistance their three competitors.

Slick has been UB's top finisher in the past four of UB's five cross country meets in the 2002 season. He turned in a season-best time of 24:52.97 to finish second among 43 runners at the Miami Fall Classic on September 21 in Oxford, OH. The time was his first sub-25 minute clocking of his two-year UB career.

Last season, Slick became the first UB runner since 1970 to represent the Bulls at the NCAA National Championship. He finished 91st in a 249-runner field in a 10K time of 30:54.

The Bulls will travel to Terre Haute, IN for this Saturday's 2002 Asics/Pacesetter Pre-Nationals. The race, starting at 2 pm, will be held at the LaVern Gibson Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. The same site will also be the host of the 2003 NCAA Championships on November 25. UB will be among 90 entered teams in the meet, which will be broken into three separate divisions Blue, White and Open. The Bulls will race in the Open 8K event against 19 other schools, including MAC rivals Ball State, Ohio and Toledo. Nationally-ranked squads from Stanford (1), Colorado (3) and Northern Arizona (4) will also be competing at the meet on Saturday, however they will not be in UB's division.
